Cancellation Watch: Lanterns Gets a Positive Update, The Miniature Wife Could Use Help from Fans, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Lanterns (HBO, Status: Renewal Possible): The prospects for this DCU series have been less than stellar of late with the viewership numbers seemingly on the low side and HBO boss Casey Bloys saying that nothing is currently in development with that franchise. But this last week has brought some updates that seem to deliver positive news for the show. That starts with the fact that Bloys himself will likely be sticking around after the Paramount merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, meaning that he will probably lobby for the HBO shows. In addition, the latest viewership numbers (seven million for Episode 7 after three days across all platforms) are showing a positive trend, suggesting that people are sticking with the show. And lastly, the Season 2 writers’ room is bolstering its staff, meaning that HBO is certainly keeping open the possibility that this one could continue. For these reasons, I am moving it out of Bubble status and back to Renewal Possible, and fans should continue to make some noise on the social networks to improve the show’s chances of sticking around.

The Miniature Wife (Peacock, Status: On the Bubble): This sci fi comedy premiered back in April, and there has still been no word on its fate. It did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, though that is not uncommon for a Peacock series. The showrunners do have plans to continue this one beyond its first season, but this streamer has typically not been very supportive of its originals. I am moving it to Bubble status, and fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring it more attention.

The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): Linear viewership was down for this TWD spin-off in its third season, and I have not seen any numbers for its streaming run on AMC+. It wrapped up its storylines with its Season 3 finale, but also left open the possibility of a fourth season. I’m thinking AMC would not outright cancel one of the entries from its biggest franchise and would more likely give it a final season like it did with Daryl Dixon, but there has been no word on it since wrapping up in September. Fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to improve this show’s chances for returning for at least one more year.

Sugar (Apple TV, Status: Renewal Possible): There has been no word on the fate of this series since it wrapped up its second season in August, but its prospects look good. According to Luminate, its Season 2 premiere pulled in 3.8 million views in its first six days, making it the seventh most-watched Apple TV original going back to 2025. That puts it above shows like Silo Season 3, Publius Season 1, and Severance Season 2, all of which have been renewed. So unless viewership dropped off notably during the season (I have not seen those numbers yet), I like this one’s chances of coming back for a third year.
