Cancellation Watch: The Boys Enters the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, Citadel Season 2 Gets Off to a Slow Start, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

The Boys (Prime Video, Status: Final Season): The Boys entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at the Number 2 slot for the week of its Season 5 premiere, pulling in an estimated 899 million minutes of viewing across five days. That is down from over one billion minutes for the Season 4 premiere, but the viewership numbers are still strong for a streaming original. That show is in its final season, but spin-offs like Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico are currently in the works.

Citadel (Prime Video, Status: On the Bubble): This spy fi series had its second season premiere last week, and while the Nielsen numbers are not available yet (those run on about a one month delay), Luminate has some initial viewing stats for the show. According to that service, the second season has pulled in 1.1 million viewers over its first five days whereas the first season had 4.1 million over that same time, a drop of 72%. This one has already been somewhat of a bust for Amazon with the cost of its first season spiraling out of control to $200 million. The viewership it drew in its first year was disappointing as well, and the plan to turn this into a global franchise has stalled. Two international spin-offs were made–the Italian Citadel: Diana and the Indian Citadel: Honey Bunny–but both of those lasted just one season and it appears the other planned spin-offs will not go forward. With the second season of the main series getting off to a slow start (in part because Amazon did very little to promote it), the status of the franchise is in doubt and I am starting this one off On the Bubble.

Daredevil: Born Agaim (Disney+, Status: Renewed): This series wrapped up its second season last week, and it has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings yet. This one has a huge global fanbase that fought hard for its revival after the Netflix cancellation back in 2018, but for some reason, they have not shown in up force since the series has returned on Disney+. The first season did not place in the Nielsen Rankings and it is looking like the second season might not as well. It has been renewed for a third year, and work has already started on that, but don’t be surprised if it ends around that point.

Record of Ragnarok (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This animated fantasy series spent three weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for its third season run, but there has been no word on the show since then. It definitely has more material to pull from to continue for a fourth year and possibly more, but it is unclear if the streamer has plans for that at this point. Fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention and help it to continue with its story.
