Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
Paradise (Hulu, Status: Renewed): The second season of this mystery box series entered into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere at the Number 5 slot with an impressive 950 million minutes viewed. That tops any single week of viewership from the show’s first season and suggests that its audience is growing. It has already been renewed for a third and final season, but Hulu may be considering a spin-off or sequel series based on these numbers.
One Piece (Netflix, Status: Renewed): The second season of this live-action anime remained at Number 1 in the Netflix Top 10 for a third week in a row, totaling 274 million hours watched so far and averaging 91.3 million hours per week. It is one of the streamer’s most expensive shows, but it has proven a hit across its first two seasons. It has already been renewed for a third year, and could continue beyond that.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen (Netflix, Status: Mini-Series): This Duffer Bros. horror entry made it to the Number 2 slot for the week of its premiere, pulling in 28.3 million hours of viewing across 4.5 million households. It has been designated as a mini-series, but these numbers could earn it a second season if there is room for the story to continue (or perhaps turn it into a season-long anthology).
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (Apple TV, Status: Renewal Possible): This Monsterverse series did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its second season premiere, but that is not uncommon for Apple TV entries. It did make it to Number 1 on that streamer’s Top 10 worldwide, though, so it appears to be off to a strong start and could continue to a third season.
Fallout (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This post-apocalyptic series dropped out of the Nielsen Streaming Rankings a couple of weeks ago, but it had a successful run for its second season. It pulled in an estimated 7.9 billion minutes of viewing across the nine weeks it was in that chart, and Amazon claims that 83 million people have watched at least part of the second season so far. That makes it the second-most-watched original on that service, behind the second season of Reacher from 2023-24. Fallout has been renewed for a third and final season, but Amazon is likely considering spin-offs or sequels to keep the franchise going.
