What Is It?

This series follows Sydney Bristow, a young woman who believes she is working for a secret branch of the CIA, only to discover that the organization she serves is actually part of a dangerous global conspiracy. After learning the truth, she becomes a double agent for the real CIA while continuing to operate inside the criminal group. Balancing espionage missions, elaborate disguises, and dangerous international operations, Sydney works to dismantle the organization from within while protecting those closest to her.

Why Watch It?

This series was created by J.J. Abrams after he had left the teen drama Felicity and before he would go on to co-create his most renowned series Lost. And Alias is very much a run-up to the latter show, slowly working in sci fi concepts to the storylines while also developing an overall arc for the series. The genre elements were rather sparse at first, but once the show got into its second season and beyond, they became more prevalent as it developed the mythology around Milo Rambaldi and his artifacts.  Plus, it was also given the chance to resolve its storylines when the series came to an end with its fifth season.

And of course, this one proved to be a breakout role for Jennifer Garner, turning her into an action hero and launching her to the big screen. Sadly, 2005’s Box Office flop Elektra would derail her to a degree (not her fault, though), and these days we mostly see her in credit card commercials. But she did do a heck of a job as Sydney Bristow in Alias, and Hollywood should remember that and start offering her better roles. A young Brad Cooper (Guardians of the Galaxy) also starred in the early seasons, as the cast was definitely full of talent, helping to make this a standout series. Alias takes about a season to hit its stride and really get into its sci fi elements, but this is a show worth seeking out for its pedigree and for delivering a decent genre entry.
