Cancellation Watch: Starfleet Academy Misses the Nielsen Top 10, 11.22.63 Continues to Perform Well for Netflix, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Starfleet Academy (Paramount+, Status: Renewed): The latest entry in the Star Trek franchise did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming rankings for the week of its premiere. That is not uncommon, though, as neither Star Trek: Strange New Worlds nor Star Trek: Picard made it into the rankings for their inaugural weeks. According to Luminate, Starfleet Academy had 2.1M viewers for the first eight days in which the first two episodes were available, which was better than what Strange New Worlds or Picard had for their third season premieres, so the show seems to be off to a relatively decent start, and it was renewed for a second season in advance. But there are also rumors that Alex Kurtzman could be on his way out as the guiding force of Trek at Paramount and that Starfleet Academy (which has received mixed reviews so far) will not continue beyond its second season. Nothing has been confirmed on that at this point, though, and the new show does seem to be off to a relatively good start as far as viewership.

The Beauty (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): The latest entry from Ryan Murphy also did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere. I have seen no linear viewing numbers for the series (those have been hard to come by lately for cable shows), and FX has not made any statements on how the premiere performed. The trailer set a record for the cable channel with 190 million views, but it is unclear at that point if those people tuned in for the actual series. I will keep my eye out for further info on this one, but it is getting harder and harder for basic cable to draw eyes to their original programming.

11.22.63 (Netflix, Status: Encore Run): This ten-year-old time-travelling mini-series spent a second week in a row in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, improving to the Number 5 slot and pulling in an estimated 970 million minutes of viewing for its encore run on Netflix. It was a close-ended story that was not designed to continue to a second season, but perhaps Netflix will consider adapting another Stephen King story to mini-series in a similar fashion.

Fallout (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): Don’t believe the early claims that this video game-based series is fading in its second season, even though it slipped in the rankings again. It was at Number 7 for its fifth week, but it pulled in another 844 million minutes of viewing. and it has nearly 4.4 billion total for its second season run. The show has already been renewed for a third season and should continue beyond that.
