Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for February 12th:
The Mandalorian Season 4 (Disney+)
A fourth season of this show was announced back in 2023, but then Disney shifted its plans and decided to take the characters to the big screen. The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to hit theaters May 22nd, and now it appears that Mando and his companions will be heading back to television following that. The latest Production Weekly listings has an entry for the fourth season of the show, though an official announcement has not been made. I am not going to look at this as a guarantee at this point, but John Favreau previously indicated that he had the scripts ready for another season prior to the movie announcement. I don’t know how much of the planned fourth season is covered in the upcoming film, if any, though I am sure there is still plenty of material to keep the show going.
Ultimately, my guess is that the fourth season will be contingent on the success of the movie. If it has a good Box Office showing–which will be the expectation seeing as it gets the high profile May release date–the Mouse House will likely give the greenlight for another season of the show. If it disappoints, they may decide not to move forward with The Mandalorian, especially considering that the show experienced a notable drop in viewership in its third year. The listing in Production Weekly–which just came out last night and mainstream entertainment media has not reported on it yet–is likely an indication that pre-production has started. And if the movie scores a success at the Box Office, this Star Wars spin-off will continue on the small screen. I will keep an eye out for further news related to this show, but consider the fourth season tentative at the current time.
Skeleton Crew Season 3 (Disney+)
This is another Disney+ Star Wars entry showing up in the latest Product Weekly listings, and it has not received an official renewal either. The first season premiered in December 2024, and the viewership was on the lower side compared to other Star Wars live-action shows. It still performed relatively well for a streaming original, though perhaps not enough to justify its $136 million budget. It was not designated as a mini-series as Disney has been doing with many of its television entries, and the showrunners do have plans for a second season. With this one now showing up in Production Weekly, that suggests that things are moving forward with the show, but my guess is the creative team will not have as much money to work with. I will not count it as renewed just yet, but this is a promising development for the show, and be sure to stay tuned for updates.
Baldur’s Gate (HBO)
Early development has been moving forward on this Dungeons & Dragons video game-based series, and now it appears to be officially heading into production. The game places players in the role of a character infected with a mind flayer parasite, granting strange powers while threatening eventual transformation. As the story unfolds, players must decide whether to resist, exploit, or embrace this corruption while navigating political intrigue, ancient evils, and personal moral choices. According to Deadline, the television series will be a continuation from the Baldur’s Gate 3 game, “as the characters — old and new — are dealing with the ramifications of the events in the third game”. Craig Mazin, who co-created The Last of Us series, will be onboard as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner, and the show will likely be targeting a 2027 premiere.
Other genre entries from the listings for February 12th: American Horror Story (FX) Season 13, Murderbot (Apple TV) Season 2
