Cancellation Watch: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Starts Strong, Fallout Rises in the Nielsen Rankings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO, Status: Renewed): Nielsen ratings data for the linear channels is getting more and more difficult to come by, so I have not seen the numbers for the broadcast premiere of this show, but HBO put out a statement on its debut viewership. According to the cabler, this Game of Thrones prequel pulled in 6.7 million viewers over its first three days on HBO and HBO Max, including encore runs. That puts it below Season 2 of House of the Dragons, but in the Top 3 launches on HBO Max, and off to a strong start. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is less expensive to produce than the other prequel series, so expectations were not as high, but it still performed well. The show has already been renewed for a second season and could continue beyond that.

Fallout (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): The viewership numbers for this show’s second season have not been as high as the first year, but that is because it is releasing one episode per week for its sophomore season. And the fact is that the numbers have gone up from week to week. It debuted in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at Number 4 with an estimated 794 million minutes viewed and improved in its second week to Number 3 with 918 million minutes. At this rate, it could be over one billion minutes by its third week. It has already been renewed for a third season, and I expect that it will continue beyond that.

It: Welcome to Derry (HBO, Status: Renewal Possible): There has been no official word on a second season of this horror prequel yet, but The Hollywood Reporter made a passing mention in a recent article claiming that work on that has begun. I have not seen it show up in the Production Weekly listings yet, but I have been expecting the renewal. It does not count as a breakout hit in its first season, but viewership has been decent, and I expect to hear an announcement on this one soon.

Pluribus (Apple TV, Status: Renewed): This series improved to Number 6 in the Nielsen Rankings for the week of its season finale with an estimated 483 million minutes of viewing, its best performance yet. It has already been renewed for a second season, and it has been getting attention at awards time, so it should stick around for a few years.
