Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney+, Status: Renewed): This fantasy entry slipped to Number 7 on the Nielsen charts with an estimated 410 million minutes viewed for the second week of its second season. That continues the trend of a week return performance in its sophomore year, suggesting that the long delay between seasons–especially for a show that targets younger viewers–may have hurt it. This one has already been renewed for a third season, but don’t be surprised if it ends up wrapping up around that point.
Fallout (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This post-apocalyptic series returned to the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its second season premiere, landing at the Number 4 slot with an estimated 794 million minutes of viewing. At first glance, that appears to be down from the 2.9 billion minutes the show had for the premiere of its first season, but at that point, it dropped all eight episodes at once whereas the show is releasing only one ep per week in its second season. The most recent Nielsen numbers do include people watching the first season, but to get close to 800 million minutes with only one new episode is rather impressive. This one has already been renewed for a third season and will likely continue on after that.
It: Welcome to Derry (HBO, Status: Renewal Possible): This horror prequel logged its second straight week in the Nielsen streaming ratings after wrapping up its first season. It improved to Number 4 on the chart with 681 minutes viewed as it is proving its resilience. There has still been no word on a second season yet (though THR has indicated that it is in the works), and fans may want to start making some noise on the social networks to support this one and nudge HBO to a renewal decision.
Pluribus (Apple TV, Status: Renewed): This one held at the Number 9 slot for the second to last week of its first season, bringing in an estimated 343 million minutes watched. It was picked up for a second season in advance, and it is starting to get attention in awards season, so I expect that it will stick around for a while.
