Netflix Has Renewed Black Mirror for Season 8

Coming as no surprise, Netflix has given an eighth season renewal to its sci fi anthology series Black Mirror. That show has continued to perform well for the streaming service, having spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for its seventh season and averaged 162 million hours watched per week across 32 million accounts during that time (the highest for any sci fi/fantasy series on the service in the 2024-25 season). It has also typically garnered a lot of attention at awards time. This renewal will push the show past the three-to-five season range that is much more typical for Netflix shows, giving it six seasons with that streamer (its first two aired on Channel 4 in Britain). As an anthology, each season counts as an event, and the show has continued to draw new viewers because of its good reputation.

Co-creator Charlie Booker is currently working on scripts for the show and had the following to say about the upcoming season:

I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, that’s exciting. That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away.

He went on to say the following about his thought process approaching the season:

Well, what haven’t we done yet, and what tone am I looking for? It’s a useful thought experiment when approaching a new story. Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?

Booker previously said that he hopes Black Mirror will run forever, so this one could stick around for a while if the viewership holds up. Considering the typical extended production time for streaming originals these days, it’s likely that Season 8 will not arrive until 2027.

This renewal counts back on the 2024-25 season, and it brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score to 36 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (55% of shows tracked) vs. 24 cancelled and ending (36%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.
