Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1 premiere

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Stranger Things (Netflix, Status: Final Season): This series has set another viewership record, pulling in an estimated 8.5 billion minutes of viewing for the week of its fifth season premiere according to Nielsen. That number includes the first four seasons plus the first four episodes of the fifth and final season which were released on November 26th (the Nielsen numbers run on about a one month delay). And for last week’s premiere of Vol. 2 of Season 5 on Netflix, it pulled in 284.8 million hours of viewing across 34.5 million accounts and hit Number 1 yet again in the Netflix Top 10. The series finale releases today, but spin-offs for the show are in the works, with the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 arriving in 2026.

Pluribus (Apple TV, Status: Renewed): Apparently I did not get the memo–or just forgot about it–but Apple TV’s Pluribus was picked up for two seasons in advance. That one wrapped up its first season last week and set viewership records for the streamer, even though it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. But it will be returning for a second season, though that will take a while (probably 2027 at the earliest) according to Vince Gilligan (you can read my review of the show at this link).

The Mighty Nein (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This animated fantasy series (which is linked to Legend of Vox Machina universe) has not placed in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the first two weeks of its premiere. That is not uncommon for animated shows, though, and it has already been renewed for a second season, so more is on the way.

Record of Ragnarok (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This anime series dropped to Number 10 in the Netflix rankings for the third week of its third season, pulling in 10.4 million hours of viewing across 1.7 million accounts. It has still performed relatively well for the streamer, and I like its chances of continuing to a fourth season.
