Cancellation Watch: It – Welcome to Derry Goes Out Strong, Stranger Things Sets a New Record, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

It: Welcome to Derry (HBO/HBO Max, Status: Renewal Possible): This horror prequel has only spent one week in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings so far, but it has been averaging nearly 20 million viewers globally, and the season finale pulled in 6.5 million viewers in the U.S. on HBO and HBO Max based on Live+3 day viewership. Those certainly seem like strong enough numbers to justify a second-season renewal, and I expect an announcement on this one shortly.

Stranger Things (Netflix, Status: Final Season): This series has already set several viewership records for Netflix, and with the release of its fifth season, it has surpassed another milestone. Less than a month after the premiere of the first half of Season 5, the show has surpassed 1.2 billion views which the streamer defines as separate accounts. And that will certainly increase with the remaining episodes releasing over the coming week (eps 5 to 7 on December 25th and the series finale on December 31st). The main series is wrapping up, but an animated show is on the way and more spin-offs are likely in the works as well.

Record of Ragnarok (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This anime slipped a little in the second week of its third season, placing at Number 5 in the Netflix Top 10 with 20.6 million hours viewed across 3.3 million accounts. There is still more material from the Manga for this show to cover, and I like its chances of continuing to a fourth season at this point.
