What Is It?

This series follows brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they crisscross the country hunting demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural threats. Raised into the life by their father after their mother’s mysterious death, the brothers become skilled hunters while uncovering larger mythologies involving angels, demons, ancient creatures, and apocalyptic prophecies.

Aired: The WB/CW, 2005-20, 15 Seasons Totaling 327 Episodes

Starring: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, Misha Collins, Mark A. Sheppard, Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Created By: Eric Kripke

Why Watch It?

Supernatural is the longest-running sci fi/fantasy show in the U.S., so if you are looking for a series to keep you busy for a while, this is a good candidate. The first five seasons of the show are the best as those are the ones where creator Eric Kripke is onboard as showrunner, and that was when he set up much of the lore and established the central characters. The first season is somewhat hit and miss, but by the second the show is hitting its stride and the story continues to build until Sam and Dean must try to stop the apocalypse in the fifth year. After that point, your mileage may vary, but Supernatural did still come up with some good story arcs, and it also had those meta episodes that were a ton of fun.

And, of course, central to the series is the cast that helped make the show what it is. Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester both took this show on their backs and developed a good chemistry that helped reinforce the deep bond between the brothers. Misha Collins as Castiel and Mark A. Sheppard as Crowley came onboard as the show progressed and became just as essential along with the long list of recurring characters and guest stars that made their mark. There is a lot to like about Supernatural, and a lot of episodes, and the entire show is now streaming on two different services.

Where Is It Streaming?

Supernatural was streaming on Netflix throughout much of its run on The CW, and its popularity there (where full seasons became available after their broadcast run) helped keep the show going for fifteen seasons and a prequel series. It left that streamer at the beginning of the month, and starting today (December 22nd) it is now available on Amazon’s Prime Video and Peacock. Prime Video is available through the Amazon Prime service or standalone (see options). Peacock has a free plan with limited access to their library as well as a plan with ads and a premium plan (see options). All fifteen seasons and 320+ episodes are available there (the prequel series The Winchesters is streaming on HBO Max), so there is plenty of Supernatural to keep you busy for quite a while.
