Cancellation Watch: Record of Ragnarok Enters the Netflix Top 10, Pluribus Sets an Apple TV Viewing Record, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Record of Ragnarok (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This Anime entry landed in the Netflix Top 10 for Non-English Language shows for the week of its third season premiere, pulling in 33.6 million hours viewed across 5.3 million accounts. Those are good numbers for an animated series, and there is still more material from the Manga for this show to cover, so it could continue to a fourth season.

Pluribus (Apple TV, Status: Renewal Possible): Apple TV has announced that this Vince Gilligan entry is the most-watched original in the streamer’s short history. That seems odd seeing as it has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings yet while several other Apple TV originals such as Severance did. But those numbers are on about a one-month delay, so perhaps the show has built up its audience through its first season run. It will wrap up on December 26th, and I expect a renewal announcement for this one around then.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This animated series did not make it into the Netflix Top 10 for the week of its second season premiere which is not surprising because Netflix has already given up on the show, and they never did much to promote it. The second season was announced in advance as its last, and the franchise will be moving to Amazon’s Prime Video with a live-action series that is currently in the works.

It: Welcome to Derry (HBO/HBO Max, Status: Renewal Possible): This horror prequel remained absent from the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its third full week of streaming availability. Its linear viewing numbers have been on the low side as well, so its status remains uncertain. It wrapped up its first season this past weekend, so we will likely hear an announcement soon, but at this point I still like its chances for renewal despite its less-than-spectacular viewing numbers.
