Coming as no surprise, HBO has renewed its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season ahead of its premiere, which is set for January 18th. The network’s other GoT prequel House of the Dragon has scored well in viewership over its first two seasons, and they highly anticipated Knight is expected to deliver a strong performance as well. The announcement came at a press presentation where HBO execs also reaffirmed the fourth season renewal for House of Dragons (the third season of that one is targeting a Summer 2026 premiere). We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have captured so beautifully. And this summer, ‘House of the Dragon’ is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.
The fourth season of House of the Dragon had previously been announced as its last, but HBO boss Casey Bloys backed away from that a bit:
For all of our shows, we generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision. We’ll work with them. Sometimes, people will work through the season to feel like, ‘Does it feel like a natural end? Does it not?’ So, I don’t have updates for you on any of that. But when we do, I’ll let you know.
So perhaps that one could stick around for a fifth season or more. And there are more Game of Thrones spin-offs in the works, but it may be another year or so before they arrive.
I will count the renewal for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in the score for the current season, but since we do not know exactly when House of the Dragons will return, I will not factor that in just yet. That brings the score for the 2025-26 season to 16 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (59% of shows tracked) vs. 7 cancelled and ending (26%). A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place a century before the events of Game of Thrones and follows two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends. It stars Peter Claffey, Dexter Sol Ansell, Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, and Daniel Ings, and it is based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg stories.
House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of the House of Targaryen and how the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest. It stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, and Steve Toussaint and is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood.
