Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for November 20th:
Stargate (Prime Video)
A new Stargate series was announced this week, and it is already in the Production Weekly listings. There has been talk about a return to that franchise since Amazon bought MGM Studios, and now it is officially in the works. Plans have been going back and forth between a movie that would be a hard reboot and a series that would be a continuation from the previous shows, with Amazon execs allegedly leaning toward the latter. And while no specifics have been released at this point on the storyline, it will indeed be a revival (a “brand new chapter”) as the announcement video reveals.
In addition, the people they are assembling to work on the show makes this project look rather promising. Longtime Stargate veteran Martin Gero will be writer, executive producer, and showrunner, and he previously spent time on all three of the live-action shows. He will be working closely with Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tory Tunnell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) who will serve as executive producers. Also involved are franchise alums Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi who will serve as consulting producers, and Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich–co-creators of the 1994 film that got things started–who will serve as executive producers.
Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios, made the following comment about the upcoming series:
Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.
Since this is a revival and because the talent involved should definitely have respect for the franchise, Stargate fans should be excited about this announcement. The series will stream on Prime Video, and with production kicking off now, it could potentially arrive as early as late 2026, but 2027 is more likely for the franchise’s return.
Twisted Metal (Peacock) Season 3
The Season 3 renewal for this show was just announced, and it is appearing in the latest Production Weekly list. There is no word at this point on whether that will be the final season seeing as streaming originals tend to cap out at the three to four season range. Co-creator and co-showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith will be leaving the show, but David Reed will be taking over that role going forward. The second season wrapped up this last Summer, and there was a two-year hiatus between that and the first season. So with the renewal just getting announced, expect this one to return late 2026 at the earliest, if not 2027.
Other genre entries from the listings for November 20th: The Last of Us (HBO) Season 3
