Cancellation Watch: Twisted Metal Will Continue to a Third Season, Grotesquerie Appears to Be Done, and More

Twisted Metal S2 premieres July 31st on Peacock

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Twisted Metal (Peacock, Status: Renewed): This series will be continuing its journey into the post-apocalypse for a third season, Peacock just announced. It returned for its second season this past Summer, and even though it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, it has performed well for its streamer. During its first year, Peacock reported that it was the most-binged comedy series among its originals, and for the second season, the streamer claimed it was their “second highest-reaching original returning scripted season”. Co-creator and co-showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith will be leaving the show, but David Reed will be taking over that role with the new season. Expect this one to return late 2026 or early 2027.

Grotesquerie (FX, Status: Cancelled): This Ryan Murphy horror series premiered in Fall 2024, and there has been no official word on its status yet. But journalist and industry insider Matt Belloni has claimed that the show is “one and done”. Grotesquerie did not develop much of an audience during its first season run, nor has it garnered much buzz, and I am going to count this one as cancelled for now. Fans may want to try and make some noise on the social networks to see if they can convince FX to keep the show going into a second year.

The Witcher (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This fantasy entry slipped to Number 2 in the Netflix charts for the third week of its fourth season, pulling in 26 million hours watched across 3.6 million accounts. Its viewership is definitely down in its fourth year, but the fifth (and final) season has already completed filming, so that will still be going forward and will likely premiere at some point in 2026.

It: Welcome to Derry (HBO, Status: Renewal Possible): This horror prequel series rebounded from its second-week dip, improving to a 0.09 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-48 demographic with 279K total viewers for its live broadcast on HBO. We have not seen the official streaming numbers for it on HBO Max, but according to that streamer, it did pull in over 5.7 million viewers over its first three days. Three seasons are planned for this one, and the show appears to be on track for that so far.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Twisted Metal Season 2 premiered on July 31st, the last day of the 2024-25 season, so its renewal counts back to that scorecard. Grotesquerie also counts for that season, and I am going to move Doctor Who to renewal status because even though Disney+ is no longer partnering on that one, the BBC plans to keep it going. So the score for the 2024-25 is now at 35 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (52.2% of shows tracked) vs. 20 cancelled and ending (29.9%). Below are last season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 67
Cancelled 11 16.4%
Ending 9 13.4% 29.9%
Renewed 35 52.2%
On the Bubble 7 10.4%
Renewal Possible 5 7.5%
Mini-Series 8
