Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services. Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.
Netflix was the first streaming service to start producing scripted originals (beginning with the co-production Lilyhammer back in 2012), and it has not looked back since then. The streamer began to expand upon its original programming slowly at first, but then decided that it wanted to be the market leader, and it has since succeeded on that front. Netflix currently has dozens of scripted shows actively streaming across the globe in any of a number of countries. And its total output since starting in 2012 has likely exceeded a thousand shows at this point, especially if you consider the ones aimed at younger audiences. As for sci fi and fantasy, the streamer has been quite prolific there, with well over one hundred shows when you include non-English language entries. That kicked off with Daredevil and the other MCU Defenders entries back in 2015 and only continued to expand since then.
Early on, Netflix was good about supporting its originals, and it had very few cancellations during the first five years or so after it entered the scripted programming game. But then the streamer changed its strategy and started focusing on the completion rate as one of the success measures for its shows. That tracks how many viewers completed the current season available within a set amount of time, while also defeating the whole purpose of viewing on demand. A much higher cancellation rate followed, starting around the 2018-19 season, and we have since seen notably more shows cut down by an “Off with Their Heads!” verdict from the Netflix Red Queen. In addition, Netflix shows rarely go more than three or four seasons with a few exceptions like Stranger Things, The Witcher, and animated entries like The Dragon Prince. So while the streamer does have quite a lot of originals, not many of them lasted very long (and each season is generally six to eight episodes).
But Netflix does have some notable sci fi and fantasy shows like the ones mentioned above as well as Black Mirror, Wednesday, The Sandman, 3 Body Problem, Lucifer (saved from cancellation by Fox), The OA, and more. It also has some notable foreign-language shows like Dark, The Rain, 3 Percent, Kingdom, and more. So there are plenty of genre entries to keep you busy if you subscribe to this service, just understand that many of them did not stick around too long, and a frustratingly large number of them were cut short.
You can get a basic subscription to Netflix, which includes ads, for $7.99 per month, and that supports two devices. The next level is $17.99 for ad-free viewing across two devices (and the option to add one person who does not live with you). The highest tier is $24.99 for four devices and up to two people who live with you. The full info on the pricing plans is available at this link. And take note that Netflix does punish its subscribers for password sharing.
Following is the list of English-language shows (and a few notable foreign-language entries) that are currently available for streaming on Netflix. Note that the seasons referred to in the list below are those produced by Netflix and does not include prior seasons for shows like Black Mirror, Lucifer, and Manifest. Also note that shows previously streaming on Netflix but no longer available there (like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Hemlock Grove) are not included in this list.
