Streaming Sci Fi TV: Fawesome Has Some Good Genre Entries Available for Free (with Ads)

Where is the TV series Lexx available for streaming?

Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.  Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.

Fawesome is one of several free, ad-supported streaming services out there, and they have been building up a decent catalog of television shows and movies. They are partnered with Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros., Filmrise, Shout! Factory, and more, which brings a regular stream of content to the service. They are not quite as big as Tubi or The Roku Channel or Pluto TV yet, but it is looking like they could rival those providers at some point. Sci fi and fantasy fans should be able to find plenty of shows worth watching from Fawesome’s selection, and there are quite a lot of genre films available there as well. They do not offer an ad-free tier at this point, but the ad breaks are not too bad, usually two to five short spots per segment. Following are ten notable sci fi/fantasy shows that I came across while searching through the catalog, and you should be able to find many more gems beyond this list.

Lexx

Description: A darkly comic sci-fi adventure about a ragtag crew traveling through the universe on a sentient, planet-destroying ship called the Lexx.

Aired: 1997-2002, 4 Seasons Totaling 61 Episodes

Starring: Brian Downey, Eva Habermann, Michael McManus, Ellen Dubin

This odd little series is a love it or hate it affair, but there are plenty who loved the show all the way through. It mixes sci fi with humor and also works in some adult themes, and the later seasons adopt a more serious tone. The show delivers a wild ride, and it is at least worth a look, especially for those who like a nice helping of the bizarre with their sci fi.

Hammer House of Horror

Description: A 1980 British anthology series from the famed Hammer studio, delivering self-contained tales of supernatural terror, madness, and the macabre.

Aired: 1980, One Season Totaling 13 Episodes

Notable Guest Stars: Peter Cushing, Pierce Brosnan, Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow

This long-forgotten horror anthology never had much exposure in the U.S., but it succeeded in delivering some creepy tales in the tradition of Hammer, and fans of the genre will find this one worth a look.

Farscape

Description: A wild, inventive space opera following astronaut John Crichton, who’s flung through a wormhole and joins a fugitive alien crew aboard the living ship Moya.

Aired: 1999-2004, 4 Seasons Totaling 88 Episodes + Mini-Series

Starring: Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Virginia Hey, Anthony Simcoe, Gigi Edgley

This classic sci fi series could be uneven at times, but when at its best, it delivered a cinematic experience and some top-notch genre tales. Only the first two seasons are available on Fawesome, though, so you will have to head over to The Roku Channel or Pluto TV for the rest of the series. (You can read more about the show at this link.)

The Dead Zone

Description: Based on Stephen King’s novel, it follows a man who awakens from a coma with psychic abilities that let him glimpse the past and future through touch.

Aired: 2002-07, 6 Seasons Totaling 80 Episodes

Starring: Anthony Michael Hall, Nicole de Boer, Chris Bruno

This sci fi/paranormal series has flown under the radar ever since it was originally airing. It had an interesting premise and delivered some good episodes, and it was driven by an excellent performance by Anthony Michael Hall. It did start to grow long-in-the-tooth over its six-season run, but it is certainly worth a look.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Description: A witty British sci-fi comedy chronicling the absurd adventures of an ordinary man swept into interstellar chaos after Earth’s destruction.

Aired: 1981, One Season Totaling 6 Episodes

Starring: Simon Jones, David Dixon, Mark Wing-Davey, Sandra Dickinson, Stephen Moore

After the original radio series, this counts as the best version of the first arc of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It brought over most of the cast from the radio series, and while it was a low-budget BBC production, it still did a pretty good job of adapting the source material to the small screen. This is a sci fi classic and a must-watch series.  (You can read more about the show at this link.)

Eerie, Indiana

Description: A quirky cult favorite about a boy who discovers his seemingly normal hometown is a bizarre hub for the strange and supernatural.

Aired: 1991-93, One Season Totaling 19 Episodes

Starring: Omri Katz, Justin Shenkarow, Mary-Margaret Humes, Francis Guinan

This fun little show delivered some creepy moments and good scares along with its share of laughs. This is a true cult show, and while it brings plenty of ’90s cheesiness, it is also a ton of fun and certainly worth seeking out. (Not so much the sequel series from later in the ’90s, though.)

Space: 1999

Description: When a nuclear explosion blasts the Moon out of orbit, the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha struggle to survive while drifting through deep space.

Aired: 1975-77, 2 Seasons Totaling 48 Episodes

Starring: Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Barry Morse, Catherine Schell, Nick Tate

Put your suspension of disbelief in high gear and just sit back and enjoy this “sci fi” entry from the ’70s that tried to combine 2001: A Space Odyssey headiness with lots of explosions when it first arrived on television. The second season amped up the action and toned down the metaphysical elements, but it could still be fun at times as long as you don’t try to make any sense of the “science” of the show.  (You can read more about the show at Cult-SciFi.com.)

The Dresden Files

Description: A modern-day wizard moonlighting as a private investigator tackles supernatural crimes in contemporary Chicago.

Aired: 2007, One Season Totaling 12 Episodes

Starring: Paul Blackthorne, Valerie Cruz, Terrence Mann, Conrad Coates

This supernatural drama disappeared all too soon, and many felt that it did not live up to the books it was based on. But Paul Blackthorne did a heck of a job playing Harry Dresden, and the show could be quite fun at times. Given another season or two, it could have turned into a genre classic.  (You can read more about the show at Cult-SciFi.com.)

Land of the Lost

Description: A family trapped in a prehistoric dimension must survive among dinosaurs, primitive races, and mysterious alien technology.

Aired: 1974-77, 3 Seasons Totaling 43 Episodes

Starring: Wesley Eure, Kathy Coleman, Spencer Milligan, Phillip Paley, Ron Harper

A reboot of this classic ’70s Saturday Morning entry is on the way to Netflix, so why not rewatch the original that actually delivered some decent sci fi episodes at times set in a mysterious world created by Star Trek veteran David Gerrold?  It holds up better than you might expect.  (You can read more about the show at Cult-SciFi.com.)

Earth: Final Conflict

Description: Created from a Gene Roddenberry concept, this series explores humanity’s uneasy alliance with enigmatic alien “Taelons” whose true motives remain unclear.

Aired: 1997-2002, 5 Seasons Totaling 110 Episodes

Starring: Kevin Kilner, Lisa Howard, Von Flores, Richard Chevolleau, Leni Parker

This series got off to a good start, exploring human contact with an alien civilization that appears to be benevolent but that may have more nefarious motives. Sadly, it derailed in later seasons, but the first two years or so are certainly worth a look.

And there are even more sci fi and fantasy shows you can find on the service like Masters of Horror, Tales of Tomorrow, The Ray Bradbury Theater, Robocop: The Series, NightMan, The Invisible Man (1958), Andromeda, Van Helsing, Monsters, and more.  And they have quite a notable selection of genre films as well, so Fawesome can certainly keep you busy with TV shows and movies to watch without having to pay for a monthly subscription.
