Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services. Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.
Paramount+ got its start as CBS All Access in 2015 which was essentially the streaming arm of the CBS broadcast network at that time. One of its very first originals was Star Trek: Discovery, and the service–which rebranded to Paramount+ in 2020–has since leaned heavily on the Trek franchise for its originals in the sci fi and fantasy genres. Discovery was followed by Star Trek: Short Treks and Star Trek: Picard, and then two animated entries came after that, Lower Decks and Prodigy. Next up was Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which is heading into its fourth season, and Starfleet Academy is on the way in January. Also of note is the one-shot movie Star Trek: Section 31. Apart from Trek, CBS All Access brought back The Twilight Zone in 2019, and that ran for two seasons. The streamer also picked up Evil from CBS after its first season, and it ran there for three more years. A reboot of The Stand mini-series premiered in 2020, and Halo: The Series ran for two years starting in 2022. Other genre entries of interest that have run on CBS All Access and/or Paramount+ include the supernatural drama Wolf Lake, the spy fi series Rabbit Hole, and the second season of the action-adventure entry Blood & Treasure. All of the past Star Trek live-actions shows are also available on the service (plus The Animated Series) along with all of the movies. Prodigy is no longer available on the service, pulled shortly after it was cancelled, but pretty much everything else Trek is streaming there. And I expect more going forward, though it is unclear at this point what the merger with Skydance will bring. Paramount+ also offers a notable back catalog of Paramount-owned shows like the original Twilight Zone, Jericho, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aeon Flux, and more.
You can sign up for Paramount+ for $7.99 per month for the essential plan which includes ads. The premium plan (without ads) runs $12.99 per month and that includes Showtime originals. You can read more about the plans at this link, and you can also add Paramount+ with Amazon’s Prime Video.
