Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Has Begun on Black Hole, John Carpenter Presents, and More

A TV series is in the works based on Charles Burns' Black Hole comic

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for October 23rd and October 30th:

Black Hole (Netflix)

Netflix has given a straight-to-series order for this horror entry which is based on the series of graphic novels by Charles Burns. Deadline gives the following description for the property:

There’s an old myth that haunts the seemingly perfect small town of Roosevelt: if you have sex too young, you’ll contract the “bug,” a virus that literally turns you into a “monster” from your worst nightmares. Absurd, right? That’s what Chris always assumed, until, after one reckless night at the beginning of senior year, she finds herself infected. Now she’ll be cast out to the woods to live with the other infected, where a chilling, new threat emerges: a serial killer who’s hunting them one-by-one.

This come from New Regency, and Jane Schoenbrun will be onboard as writer and director. The series is showing up on the latest Production Weekly list, so work is commencing.

John Carpenter Presents

This season-long anthology was announced a couple of weeks ago, and work is now moving forward. Horror legend John Carpenter has come onboard as executive producer, and creators Michael Amo (The Listener) and Will Pascoe (Orphan Black) will act as showrunners. Following is the description of the first season according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Season 1 will be set in the remote wilderness of Alaska. As a diverse group of characters face a chilling mix of supernatural and existential terror, the anthology series will explore the hidden fears and social anxieties of our time.

This is being produced by Elevation Pictures, and while no network or streaming service is attached at this point, it should draw plenty of interest.

Something Is Killing The Children

This series based on the BOOM! Studios comic of the same name was just announced by Blumhouse, and it is now showing up on the Production Weekly list. The studio will be producing a film that will hit the big screen along with an adult animated television series. The Hollywood Reporter gives the following description for the property:

Children’s first story arc told of a town plagued by monsters that feast on children, with one teen survivor telling tales that no adult believes. Enter: a mysterious young woman named Erica Slaughter. The woman, who occasionally converses with her stuffed animal, isn’t there to mince words, but rather to mince monsters. The stories since have opened up a world that includes a monster-killing cabal and its sinister politics.

The animated series will be helmed by comic co-creator James Tynion IV. No network or streaming service is attached at this point, but this one should draw some interest.

Additional Production News

Filming has wrapped on Mike Flanagan’s mini-series adaptation of Carrie at Prime Video. That should have the show on track for a 2026 premiere.

Other genre entries from the listings for October 23rd and October 30th: The Boys from Brazil (Netflix), Fallout Season 3 (Prime Video), Murdebot Season 2 (Apple TV+), Pacific Rim (Prime Video).
