Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Begins on The X-Files Reboot, Magic 8 Ball, God of War, and More

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for October 16th:

The X-Files (Disney)

Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Sinners) is working on a reboot of The X-Files, and that is now showing up in the Production Weekly listings. Not many details are available at this point, but it appears this will be a continuation of the series with a new cast. Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven) is currently in talks to play the lead female investigator and she will be paired with a male agent. Coogler has also talked with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson about joining the show, but neither is officially onboard at this time. Robert Patrick, who played Agent John Doggett, has also expressed interest in returning to the show. This will be a Disney production since that company acquired the property when it bought Fox Entertainment, so it would likely stream on Disney+ or Hulu.

Magic 8 Ball

In the “TV Series We Don’t Need” category is a show based on the Magic 8 Ball toy, but it is in the works anyway. M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Split) and Brad Falchuk (American Horror Story) are attached at this point with the former directing and the latter writing and both acting as showrunners. The official description of the series claims it will

Reimagine the classic Magic 8 Ball as the centerpiece of a high-concept, character-driven supernatural drama that blends psychological intensity with cultural intrigue.

Shyamalan announced it with the Instagram post seen above, and it will be produced by Mattel Studios. No network or streaming service is attached at this point, but perhaps they can used the Magic 8 Ball to guide them in the right direction…

God of War (Amazon)

This series, based on the video game of the same name, was announced several years back and production is moving forward again at this point at Amazon. It has shown up in the Production Weekly listings the last few weeks, and the word is that filming will begin in 2026. The series will focus on the Greek God of War Kratos, and following is the official description:

When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.

Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) was originally attached to the project as showrunner with Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, The Expanse) onboard as writers, but they departed over creative differences and Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar: Galactica) has stepped in as writer, executive producer and showrunner. No casting announcements have been made at this point, but that is probably currently in the works.

The Jetsons

This animated comedy showed up in the latest listings, but it is unclear which reboot version that is referring to. Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) was working on a live-action, thirty-minute sitcom for ABC at one point, and there is also a live-action movie in the works for Warner Bros. with Jim Carrey possibly playing George Jetson. The former was first announced all the way back in 2017, and there have not been many updates since then while the movie version just got the update on the Jim Carrey casting. So it appears that production is more active on the film and this listing may refer to that. As for the TV series, I can’t find any recent updates on that, so it is possible the network passed on the project.

Other genre entries from the listings for October 16th: The Last of Us Season 3 (HBO).
