Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services. Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.
When HBO Max got its start, it seemed like it might be a good streaming service for sci fi and fantasy originals. It was originally intended as the streaming arm for premium cable HBO (going by the monikers HBO Go and HBO Now), but it emerged as a service in its own right. It picked up the live-action Titans and Doom Patrol along with the animated Harley Quinn from the defunct DC Universe streaming channel. It gave the greenlight to the sci fi series Raised by Wolves as well as the mini-series DMZ and Station Eleven. And it had several other shows in the works like The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy. But then Warner Bros. merged with Discovery and things started to change for the service. Several of the premium shows like The Penguin, Dune: Prophecy, and Lanterns were shifted over to HBO, and the streamer started cancelling some of its originals, including fan-favorites Raised by Wolves and Scavengers Reign. In addition, the service started to remove several shows from streaming as write-downs like the latter two and the HBO entries The Nevers and Westworld. And currently there are very few originals that are exclusive to HBO Max with Harley Quinn, Creature Commandoes, and Peacemaker as the only genre entries remaining at the moment (and the latter could be ending with its second season).
So while that makes this service no longer a good landing spot for new streaming originals, it still has quite a catalog of shows available seeing as most of the HBO originals are streaming there. Going all the way back to 2003’s Carnivale, there is a notable selection of genre entries to choose from. And HBO has several shows of interest on the way like It: Welcome to Derry (premieres October 26th), A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (premieres January 18th), and Lanterns (premieres in 2026), all of which will be available for streaming on HBO Max. The service is included with a subscription to HBO, or you can get it stand-alone starting from $9.99 a month for the basic tier with ads (you can see all the plans at this link). It is also currently available in a bundle with Disney+ and Hulu (see the prior link for details).
HBO Max itself may no longer be investing much in new scripted originals, but the service still acts as the streaming arm to HBO and has quite a lot to offer including classics like Game of Thrones, True Blood, The Leftovers, and His Dark Materials. So this service can definitely keep you busy for a while with its sci fi and fantasy streaming offerings.
