Cancellation Watch: Alien Earth Continues to Slip, James Gunn Casts Doubt on Peacemaker Season 3, and More

Alien: Earth TV Series Review

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu, Status: Renewal Possible): This series slipped to a 0.07 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 478K total viewers for its season finale on FX. That is a low point for the ratings in the demo, but the total viewers actually went up from last week. It remained in the Nielsen charts but slipped to the Number 10 slot with an estimated 326 million minutes watched. These numbers are not quite as strong as Disney (which owns FX and Hulu) might want, but could be enough to get the show a second season. However, fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to help give this one a boost.

Peacemaker (HBO Max, Status: Renewal Possible): This DCEU entry did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for a second week, and creator James Gunn has put a damper on hopes for a third season. When talking to Collider, he said “It is not right now… that doesn’t mean there aren’t plans for these characters, but it’s not necessarily Season 3 of Peacemaker“. Gunn is busy working on the rebooted DC Universe, and he does prefer to write Peacemaker himself, so that will keep it in the wings for now. The good news is that the character has been retconned into the new continuum, and it appears he will be showing up in other projects. But it could be a while before we get a third season of the show, if that happens at all.

Upload (Prime Video, Status: Final Season): This sci fi comedy did not place in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its Season 4 premiere. The third season of the show did not make it into the rankings either, but allegedly the show has performed well for an Amazon original. The fourth year was announced in advance as its last, allowing it to wrap up its storylines.

Invasion (Apple TV+, Status: Final Season): This alien invasion series has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its third season, but that is not surprising. It did not place in that chart for its first or second year, though it apparently performed well compared to other Apple TV+ originals. Its third season was announced in advance as its last, giving it the chance to resolve its storylines.
