Cancellation Watch: Wednesday Tops the Nielsen Rankings, Alien: Earth Improves, and More

Season 2 of Wednesday premieres on Netflix

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Wednesday (Netflix, Status: Renewed): For those predicting the demise of Netflix’s supernatural dramedy Wednesday, you may want to direct your gloom and doom to another series. Yes, the viewership Netflix has reported is down year-over-year, and yes, the show is not scoring as well among critics and viewers this season. But Nielsen just caught up to the premiere week (their numbers are on about a month delay), and they have the show topping their rankings with an estimated 3.75 billion minutes watched. That includes both the first and second seasons, but those are still pretty impressive numbers. And the second half of the second season dropped on Netflix last week, boosting the show back to Number 1 in that streamer’s Top 10 with 219 million hours watched across 28 million households. The show has already been renewed for a third season, and I would expect it to stick around beyond that, especially if it is pulling viewership numbers anywhere close to what it is seeing now.

Alien: Earth (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): This show improved to a 0.10 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 361K total viewers for its fourth episode. We have not seen the streaming numbers for the show yet, but those will be available next week, and I am still thinking this one is a good bet for renewal. You can read my review of the show at this link.

The Sandman (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This show slipped to the final slot in the Nielsen Rankings for the sixth week of its second season, pulling in an estimated 279 million minutes of viewing. Overall, its viewership has been good, but not enough to convince Netflix execs to change their minds on the cancellation of this rather expensive series.
