Why Watch It?

This series got off to an inauspicious start in 1993 as an odd little show that delivered plenty of cheesiness along with any of a number of tinfoil hat conspiracy theories. It did not draw much of an audience early on and seemed to be on track to be another one-and-done sci fi TV Prime Time casualty, but a couple of things happened that affected its fate. One, critics started giving it good marks, noting the atmospheric and creepy stories it offered. Another thing that happened is that the fledgling Fox network stood by the show despite low ratings and gave it the greenlight for a second season. In its sophomore year, The X-Files started to hit its stride, and within a few years it had turned into a Top 20 hit. (Hey broadcast networks, see what can happen when you have patience in a show?)

The series continued to build on the creepiness it established while also developing an ongoing story arc with plenty of mysteries. And it would eventually go on to establish itself as a classic sci fi TV entry (more on that at this link). Sure, it started to grow long-in-the-tooth in the later seasons of its original run. And the two revival seasons are pretty much superfluous. But from its second through its sixth season, The X-Files delivered some excellent sci fi/fantasy television. And it even has some decent episodes across its other seasons if you want to seek those out. This series beat the odds and turned into a genre classic, and you can go back and watch its entire run on streaming.

Where Is It Streaming?

Every season is available for streaming on Hulu, including the two revival seasons from the 2010s. In addition, the two movies–The X-Files (1998) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008)–are streaming there as well. Hulu is one of the oldest streaming services, and it has quite a number of sci fi and fantasy originals available for viewing (you can read more about that at this link) as well as other genre entries. You can subscribe to Hulu for $9.99 per month with ads or $18.99 for the premium plan with no ads, 4K UHD, and download options for some shows and movies. There are also bundles that include Disney+, ESPN+, and/or HBO Max, and you can see the prices for those at this link.
