Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for August 28th and September 4th:
Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 (Disney+)
Season 3 of the Daredevil revival series has shown up in the Production Weekly listings two weeks in a row even though there has been no official renewal yet. The second season is scheduled for a March 2026 premiere, though that is really the second half of the first season which ended up getting broken into two parts. Series star Charlie Cox had made comments suggesting that the show would wrap up with its second season, but Vincent D’Onofrio countered that and said that there is a “good chance there will be a third”. With that now showing up in the listings, it seems that D’Onofrio could be correct and pre-production on a third year could be gearing up. If this is true, then it would cut down on the hiatus between seasons, like having it on target for a 2027 premiere. Stay tuned for more news on this one.
The Institute Season 2 (MGM+)
This conspiracy-laden paranormal series received an official renewal over a week ago, and work on the second season is now beginning. The first year reportedly performed well for MGM+ (Nielsen does not track the viewership for that channel), and with work gearing up on the second season, that could premiere as early as next Summer.
Knight Rider
I have seen this entry in the Production Weekly listings a couple of weeks in a row now, and apparently it is referring to a reboot movie that is in the works based on the ’80s television series, coming from the creators of Cobra Kai. A movie version has been in development for a while at Universal, and a script was produced written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald have since taken over production (and will likely be penning a new script), but there are not many details available at this time. If they get the property out of Development Hell, the film will probably be looking at a 2026 or 2027 premiere. Knight Rider was previously rebooted by NBC in 2008, though it lasted less than one season.
Community: The Movie
This is not really sci fi, but this quirky sitcom did appeal to many genre fans. And it looks like the long-talked-about movie is moving forward. An entry for it is in the latest Production Weekly listings, though I have not been able to find too much info beyond that. The movie continuation was actually given the greenlight back in 2022, with most of the cast confirmed to return at that time, but the Writers’ and Actors’ strikes delayed production. It appears to be back on, though, so perhaps we will be getting some more info in the next few months.
Other genre entries from the listings for August 28th and September 4th: Mayfair Witches Season 3 (AMC), The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 (AMC), Very Young Frankenstein.
