Bubble Sci Fi TV: Will Castlevania: Nocturne, Black Mirror, The Rig, Terminator: Zero, and More Be Cancelled or Renewed?

The 2024-25 season has come to an end, but there are still quite a few sci fi and fantasy shows waiting for word on their fates. We did get some renewal announcements coming out of Comic Con right at the end of the season, but some of the networks and streaming services seem to be fine with silence, hoping people will just forget about some of these shows (there are still two genre entries from the 2023-24 season that have not received an official renewal or cancellation, included below). So far, 18 genre entries have been cancelled or have ended in current season (28% of shows tracked, more on those at this link) while 31 have been renewed (48%). You can see the full rundown of shows with all of their statuses at our Cancellation Watch Page, and below I look at the ones that have not received either a cancellation or renewal announcement yet.

The shows that I have flagged as On the Bubble can certainly use a Call to Action from fans on the social networks. And pretty much every show that has not been renewed yet could benefit from any form of fan support. We have seen genre entries like The Expanse, Lucifer, and Manifest saved by fan campaigns in the past, and perhaps one of the shows below could be the next to get an extended lease on life. Be sure to follow this site and our Blue Sky, Twitter, and Mastodon accounts for updates and breaking news on these shows as the season winds down.

American Horror Stories (FX, Renewal Possible): As long as this show’s parent series AHS is going, I expect the spin-off to continue as well. These episodes will be used to pad out the syndication package, so the network (and its owner, Disney) will make money on the series no matter what. I do suspect that AHS could wrap up with its upcoming 13th season, so that could mean we will only get one more set of stories from the episodic anthology.

Final Verdict: Renewed for at least one more season.

Ark: The Animated Series (Paramount+, On the Bubble): This holdover from the 2023–24 season got some good news: the long-awaited second half of its first season will finally arrive later in 2025. But even though the video-game-based show has received some good marks, a second season seems very unlikely at this point. The cast and crew have probably been released from their contracts, and the show has received very little promotion from Paramount+. Consider it dead man walking when it returns, though maybe fans can make enough noise to give it a chance at a second season.

Final Verdict: Cancelled.

Black Mirror (Netflix, Renewal Possible): This anthology series has not been renewed for an eighth season yet, but my guess is that it’s only a matter of time. It continues to draw in strong viewership numbers, and each season is an event, so Netflix will almost certainly bring it back. Charlie Brooker has said that “hopefully” it will run forever, and I do expect it to stick around for several more seasons.

Final Verdict: Renewed.

Castlevania: Nocturne (Netflix, On the Bubble): The second season of this animated horror series spent two weeks in the Netflix Top 10, and it outpaced the viewership of the first season according to creative director Samuel Deats. The plan is to do an adaptation of the Symphony of the Night storyline for the third season, but Netflix has not issued a renewal notice yet and it has been over six months since the second year premiered.  I have moved this one to Bubble status, and it could certainly use some help from its fans.

Final Verdict: Toss up.

Doctor Who (Disney+, Renewal Possible): Many may be surprised to see this venerable series on the list, but its viewership has been on the decline at the BBC, and it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its run on Disney+. It definitely appeared to be a bubble show at one point which I looked at in more detail at this link. BBC chief content officer the Kate Phillips has confirmed that Doctor Who will continue with or without the Disney partnership, which is pretty much what I expected.  But there may be some behind-the-scenes shakeups before it returns.

Final Verdict: Renewed, but after a pause.

Foundation (Apple TV+, Renewal Possible): The third season of this sci fi series has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings yet, but that is not uncommon for Apple TV+ entries. It has not received a fourth season renewal, but this streamer has been mostly supportive of its originals, so I would say there is still a good chance of that. Don’t be surprised if the show wraps up around that point, though.

Final Verdict: Renewed, possibly for a final season.

Grotesquerie (FX, On the Bubble): There has been no word on this horror entry since it wrapped up its first season in Fall 2024, and a second season has not appeared in the Production Weekly listings. Typically, FX would have greenlit that by the beginning of the year to be ready by Fall, but nothing appears to be moving forward. The ratings were decent, but not spectacular, but this one ended on a cliffhanger, and a second season is planned. I have moved it to Bubble status, and the prospects for its continuation do not look good at the moment.

Final Verdict: Cancelled.

Harley Quinn (HBO Max, Renewal Possible): According to People, work on a sixth season of Harley Quinn has begun, but there has been no official renewal announcement, and I have not seen a listing for the show in Production Weekly.  It is possible that this one will be back because it has had a successful run on HBO Max.  Though, that streamer has been going through some cost-cutting–and this show is not part of the current DCEU reboot–so nothing is guaranteed.

Final Verdict: Renewed.

Hit Monkey (Hulu, On the Bubble): I gave up on this holdover from the 2023–24 season once, moving it to cancelled status after its first season when Hulu went silent on its fate. But it got a surprise renewal a year and a half after its premiere, and now we’re looking at over one year since the second season dropped in July 2024. This is the last of the Marvel Television shows before Marvel Studios took over all TV production, and it does not fit into the MCU as far as I’m aware. But seeing as it got a surprise renewal once before, I’m holding off on moving it to cancelled status.

Final Verdict: Toss up.

Leviathan (Netflix, On the Bubble): This steampunk anime came and went with little notice and I have no idea if there are any plans for a second season. It has not even garnered enough attention on Rotten Tomatoes to receive a score yet, though the reviews I have seen have been favorable so far. The 12-episode first season adapted all of the source material, so this may have been intended has a limited series. If not, Netflix sure dropped the ball on bringing attention to the show.

Final Verdict: Cancelled or Ending.

Love Death + Robots (Netflix, Renewal Possible): This animated anthology has had a successful run on Netflix thus far, though the recent fourth season received some mixed reviews. It did make it into the Netflix Top 10 for two weeks, so it is still drawing in viewers and could stick around for another season or two.

Final Verdict: Renewed.

Revival (Syfy, On the Bubble): The ratings were not great for this show in its first season, but Syfy originals have barely registered in the Nielsens for the past few years. It has been getting some good word-of-mouth, and it may also have international financing/syndication propping it up. But I am moving it to Bubble status and fans should certainly support it however they can to help it get to a second season.

Final Verdict: Toss up.

The Rig (Prime Video, On the Bubble): This eco-horror series has never received much support from Amazon, and I was surprised it even got a second season renewal. It has certainly set itself up to continue to a third year story-wise, but that is not guaranteed at this point, and I am moving it to Bubble status. It’s possible this one has international funding making it more viable for the streamer, but fans need to get behind the series if they want to see the next chapter.

Final Verdict: Renewed for final season.

SurrealEstate (Syfy, On the Bubble): I’m surprised that this show has made it to a third season considering it has barely registered in the Nielsens the last couple of years. But it may have international financing/syndication helping it, and perhaps that will get it to a fourth year. This has turned into a sleeper genre entry that has slowly developed a following, so if fans make enough noise to support it, perhaps it could return for another year.

Final Verdict: Renewed for final season.

Tales from the Void (ScreamBox, Renewal Possible): I’m not certain how to gauge the status of this horror anthology as Screambox is a relatively new streaming service, and the show has been barely noticed so far. The streamer may want to support it to attract viewers, but they may also be faced with limited funds. As an anthology entry, though, there is always a chance it could come back.

Final Verdict: Renewed.

Terminator Zero (Netflix, On the Bubble): Allegedly, a second season of this show is in the works, but I’ve seen no official announcement and it has not shown up in Production Weekly. This one did not make it into the Netflix Top 10 during its first season run, and it has been a year since its debut, so the chances of a continuation are looking less and less likely everyday.

Final Verdict: Cancelled.

Twilight of the Gods (Netflix, On the Bubble): Another Netflix animated entry, this one also did not make it into the Netflix Top 10 for its first season. Zack Snyder has said that “we definitely are talking about” a second season and “we know what we want to do,” but it’s looking like this show could be one-and-done with no resolution for its cliffhanger ending.

Final Verdict: Cancelled.
