Cancellation Watch: The Sandman Improves in the Nielsen Rankings, Good Omens Finale Remains in Limbo, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

The Sandman (Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This supernatural series jumped up in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week that the second half of its second season was released. It improved to the Number 3 slot with an estimated 653 million minutes of viewing. That is its best week since its second season debuted and may give a slight glimmer of hope for fans who are lobbying for Netflix to keep this one going for a third season (more on that at this link).

Good Omens (Prime Video, Status: Ending): The final 90-minute episode of this fantasy series–which is the condensed third season–has still not been released, but series star Martin Sheen gave an update of sorts when talking with Deadline: “I’m not in control but the episode is made and hopefully the people will enjoy it as and when”. That doesn’t tell us much beyond the fact that the final episode has been completed. But perhaps it is time for fans of the show to start making some noise to push Amazon to release the episode and give some closure to the series.

Alien: Earth (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): This show posted a 0.10 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 441K total viewers for its second week. That is down just slightly from the premiere episode, and those are decent numbers for a basic cable series. This one is also streaming on Hulu and Disney+, and the early numbers there have been strong, so a second season is looking like a good bet at this point.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (FX, Status: Renewed): This show slipped in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the second week of its third season, landing at the Number 9 slot with an estimated 472 million minutes of viewing. Those are still decent numbers for a Paramount+ entry, and this one has already been renewed through its fifth (and final) season.

Foundation (Apple TV+, Status: Renewal Possible): The third season of this sci fi series has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings yet, but that is not uncommon for Apple TV+ entries. It has not received a fourth season renewal, but this streamer has been mostly supportive of its originals, so I would say there is still a good chance of that. Don’t be surprised if the show wraps up around that point, though.
