Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Status Updates
Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu, Status: Renewal Possible): This show pulled in a 0.11 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 589K total viewers for its premiere episode on FX, and then the second installment of its double-ep debut had a 0.07 rating in the demo with 380K total viewers. Those are decent numbers for a basic cable entry, but not spectacular for such a highly anticipated premiere. But according to Disney, the premiere had 9.2 million views on Hulu and Disney+ across its first six days. So overall it does look like the show is off to a strong start, though we will have to see if the numbers drop off with the second episode once the curious onlookers are filtered out.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+, Status: Renewed): This Trek series entered into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its third season premiere, placing at the Number 7 slot with an estimated 471 million minutes of viewing. Those are decent numbers for a Paramount+ entry, and I expect it to hang around the Top 10 throughout its third season (it releases one ep per week). This show has been renewed through its fifth season, and that will be its last.
Wednesday (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This supernatural dramedy remained in the Number 1 slot of the Netflix Top 10 for the second week of its second season, but viewership dropped 42% to 117.3 million hours across 29.1 million accounts. Those are still very strong numbers, though, and this one has already been renewed for a third season and will likely continue beyond that.
Nautilus (AMC, Status: Cancelled): This Captain Nemo prequel series improved slightly to a 0.03 rating in the demo with 341K total viewers for the first installment of its two-episode finale then slipped to a 0.02 score with 300K total viewers. Those are not very strong numbers for such an expensive show and will not convince AMC to reverse the cancellation. Fans should continue to fight for the show because it is getting good buzz, and perhaps another venue will consider picking it up. More on that at this link.
Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+, Status: Renewed): Series star Charlie Cox made comments suggesting that the upcoming second season of this show (scheduled to arrive March 2026) will be its last. However, The Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) seems to think differently, claiming that “isn’t true”, and that there is a “good chance there will be a third”. It is hard to gauge that right now, though, because the first season did not place in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and Disney+ has been keeping its MCU shows to limited runs. But this show has a huge fanbase, and they may want to start making some noise to ensure that it continues beyond its second season.
