One Piece has been renewed for Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 premiere

Cancellation Watch: One Piece Gets Third Season Renewal, Wednesday Tops the Netflix Charts, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

One Piece (Netflix, Status: Renewed): Coming as no surprise, Netflix has renewed this live-action adaptation of the Japanese Anime for a third season in advance of its second season premiere. Production on that will begin later this year which should cut down on the hiatus between seasons. The first year premiered in August 2023 and drew strong viewership, spending eight weeks in the Netflix Top 10 and averaging 60 million hours viewed per week over that time. The second season is set to premiere in 2026, and you can get a first look at that at this link.

Wednesday (Netflix, Status: Renewed): Season 2 of this supernatural dramedy premiered last week, and it topped the Netflix charts, bringing in 202 million hours of viewing across 50 million accounts. That is down from the 341 million hours that the first season had for its debut week, but still very strong for an original from this streamer. In addition, Season 1 was at Number 2 in the Netflix Top 10 last week, pulling in 59 million hours across 8.6 million accounts. Not surprisingly, the show was renewed for a third year in advance of its Season 2 premiere.

The Orville (Hulu, Status: In Limbo): There has still been no official word on a fourth season of this show, and it got another non-update at Star Trek Las Vegas. Executive Producer Brannan Braga said that he and creator Seth McFarlane are “noodling” ideas for a fourth season which indicates that they are not even in pre-production even though the fourth season showed up in the Production Weekly listings in December 2024. So despite the fact that many fans are convinced the fourth season is moving forward (there still has not been an official renewal announcement), nothing is actively in the works at the moment.

Revival (Syfy, Status: On the Bubble): I have seen no ratings numbers for this show since its premiere episode which suggests that viewership has been too low to track. It airs on Thursdays at 10 PM EST without much of a lead-in which makes it hard for the show to build an audience, and Syfy has not done much to promote the show. I will be moving it to Bubble status as it approaches its season finale, and fans should start making some noise to bring this one more attention if they want it to continue to a third season.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

The renewal of One Piece mentioned above does not count on the 2024-25 season because the second year of that show will not premiere until 2026. So the current score remains the same at 30 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (48% of shows tracked) vs. 18 cancelled and ending (29%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 62
Cancelled 9 14.5%
Ending 9 14.5% 29.0%
