Streaming Sci Fi TV: Disney+ Has Plenty of Selections for Star Wars and MCU Fans

What sci fi and fantasy TV shows are streaming on Disney+?

Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.  Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.

The Disney+ streaming service first came on the scene in 2019, and it has put out quite a number of sci fi and fantasy scripted originals since it launched. That streamer has premiered 46 scripted originals since it began, and 32 (70%) are genre entries. And of those, you will find a lot of Star Wars and MCU tie-in shows seeing as Disney+ has leaned heavily on those franchises. The streamer got its start with The Mandalorian, and a fourth season of that one is currently in the works (though delayed, or perhaps put in limbo, due to the planned movie). The first MCU-related series was Wandavision, and quite a few more have followed since that one. The streamer has experimented with a few other franchises, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians currently headed into a second season and Goosebumps scaring up a third year. And it has had a few one-offs like The Mysterious Benedict Society. But apart from that, most of what you will find among its slate of originals are related to two of the biggest franchises the Mouse House owns. And when it comes to its back catalog, you will find a lot of shows related to Disney properties, but there is a decent selection to sift through.

Disney+ is one of the streamers that has poured a lot of money into its originals, so the production values of these are usually quite good. However, not many of the streamer’s shows stick around beyond one season. Most of the originals are considered “event series” which means that Disney+ can cancel the show if viewership is not sufficient without really cancelling it, they just claim it was always meant to last one season. And while that works well for close-end shows like Wandavision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Echo, it left fans of shows like The Book of Boba Fett, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Willow hanging (and the latter series has since been removed from streaming). Still, the “event series” approach does mean that most Disney+ shows will wrap up their main storyline after one season, though they could continue beyond that.

You can subscribe to Disney+ starting at $9.99 per month for the basic plan that includes ads, and the premium, ad-free plan goes for $15.99 per month. There are also bundles that include Hulu, ESPN+, and/or HBO Max and you can see all the options at this link.
