Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services. Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.
Apple TV+ is one of the more recent streaming services to offer original content, getting its start in November 2019. It kicked off with some notable sci fi/fantasy entries, and it has continued to represent the genre quite well through the current season. The alternate history series For All Mankind and the post-apocalyptic See were available when the streaming service launched, followed shortly after by the supernatural drama Servant. Since then, Apple TV+ has released a notable number of genre entries, comprising 34% of the original content it has produced so far. In addition, the streamer has been generally supportive of its shows with more than half of its sci fi/fantasy shows making it past their first season (not counting mini-series). Though over the last year, the cancellation rate has been slightly higher.
As far as the quality of Apple TV+’s output, the streamer has not put as much money into its productions as Netflix and Prime Video, but most of its shows do have excellent production values and tend to get good marks from critics and viewers. For All Mankind is on its way to being counted as a sci fi TV classic, and the adaptation of Foundation continues to get more acclaim each season even though it has taken plenty of liberties with its source material. Silo has also received many accolades and the under-appreciated See is certainly worth checking out. Last year’s Sugar counts as a sleeper sci fi entry, and early returns on Murderbot have been quite good as well. Beyond the originals, Apple TV+ does not have much to offer (though it does have the early Peanuts cartoons) as they have not built up much of a back catalog. But the originals will certainly keep you busy with twenty-two to choose from currently and more on the way like the For All Mankind spin-off Star City, Vince Gilligan’s new series Pluribus, and the adaptation of William Gibson’s Neuromancer.
You can subscribe to Apple TV+ directly for $9.99 a month, and you can also get it as an add-on channel with Amazon’s Prime Video.
