Cancellation Watch: Nautilus Has a Decent Launch, Resident Alien Moves to Bubble Status, and More

While another network pick up Nautilus for Season 2?

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Nautilus (AMC, Status: Cancelled): This series had its two-hour debut on Sunday and averaged a 0.06 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 670K total viewers. Those are not spectacular numbers, but decent for a basic cable series on a highly competitive night, and I expect the show will also get a lift from delayed and digital viewing. However, this will likely not change the fact that this one has been cancelled. Disney+ cast out the show as a write-down back in 2023 and AMC only picked it up for a burn-off run. It was an expensive series to produce, and likely beyond the budget of the cable network in the current environment. The ratings numbers are still encouraging news for the show, though, and may offer a glimmer of hope. If fans make enough noise in support of the series, perhaps another venue may have an interest in picking it up or partnering with AMC to finance a second season.

Resident Alien (USA, Status: On the Bubble): There have been no ratings results for this show the past two weeks, and I’m not sure if that is because the numbers have been too low to report or just because Nielsen data for the linear networks has been so spotty lately. The first two episodes had decent numbers for a basic cable entry, but the fact that it is airing at 11 PM EST–outside of Prime Time–makes it hard for this one to draw much of an audience. It only barely got the fourth season renewal in the first place (which came with a notable cut to the budget and a switch of networks), and it is starting to seem like a fifth season is a longshot. For now, I am moving this one to Bubble status and fans should stage a Call to Action on the social networks to support the show if they want it to stick around.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter (TNT, Status: Renewed): That ratings data for this show’s first season has been sporadic at best, in part because the show has been pushed to a later timeslot multiple times due to sports coverage. But the most recent two episodes have each averaged a 0.04 rating in the demo with around 350K total viewers. Those are decent numbers for basic cable these days, and this show has already been renewed for a second season, so it should be okay for now.
