Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for June 26th:
Very Young Frankenstein (FX)
This series appeared in the latest Production Weekly list, and according to Deadline, a pilot order is in the works at FX. There is not much information on what the show will be about other than it is “inspired by Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein“. Brooks himself has given the project his blessing, and he will be attached as executive producer. Also onboard are What We Do in the Shadows veterans Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garrett Basch. Robinson will act as showrunner and Waititi will direct the pilot. The original 1974 film Young Frankenstein was a horror movie parody that followed the grandson of Victor Frankenstein who travels to the castle where the monster was created and finds himself caught up in his grandfather’s experiments. It starred Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Terri Garr, Marty Feldman, and Madeline Kahn and is considered a comedy classic.
Trancers
There is not much information available on this entry, but I am working on the assumption that it is a television reboot of the Full Moon B-movie franchise of the same name. The first film came out in 1984 and followed 23rd century cop Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) as he tracked down a criminal who has the power to control people’s minds and turn them into mindless “Trancers” who carry out his orders. It is considered a cult classic and went on to produce five sequels. In 2023, Full Moon’s founder Charles Band gave an interview and mentioned the possibility of Trancers TV series:
We have a couple of really interesting possible reboot deals brewing. Now, of course, everything’s slowed down or stopped because of the writers strike and the SAG strike, but in time they’ll turn around, and it will be nice to see some of these movies like Trancers, which is one of them, get made – in the case of Trancers, into a really hopefully well-appointed series on one of the bigger streaming services.
I do not have a confirmation yet that the entry in the latest Production Weekly listings relates to that, but I will keep an eye out for more information.
