Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for June 12th and June 19th:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 (Paramount+)
The fifth season of this show was announced last week along with the fact that it will be wrapping up at that point. The fourth season was already in the works, and they are ramping up production on the next year so that there will not be as much of a pause between seasons. The fifth season will only consist of six episodes, but it will give the creative team time to resolve the show’s storylines. At the Season 3 premiere of Strange New Worlds at the Tribeca Film Festival, executive producer Henry Alonso Myers had the following to say about the show coming to an end:
One of the things you learn as a TV writer is that all shows end; it’s just a question of when. So you don’t look at it like tomorrow it’s gone… So the whole point is to go out each day trying to do it as well as you can and make it as good as you can. Don’t think about, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll get another season tomorrow.’ Like, really go for it. And we have treated every season like that. It is a blessing to be able to do five seasons. The original show got to do three, and this is more than that, which is amazing.
Akiva Goldsman added to that, saying:
We made a promise to ourselves that we would arc the show into [Star Trek: The Original Series]. And so we sort of thought, ‘Well, five year mission, okay, can we do five years?’ And we are really doing almost five—well four and a little more than half. And we needed to be able to tell that story. Because right now [the characters] are in mid-stage development. How do they become who they are? What happens to some of them? Those are questions that we knew we needed to answer and promised to answer. And so that’s our five-year plan.
He went on to say “And then we run into TOS“, hinting at the possibility of a continuation with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy back in the picture, but nothing official has been announced on that front. Season 3 of Strange New Worlds premieres July 17th.
The Twilight Zone Movie
This one showed up on last week’s list, and after doing some research, it will be a movie, not a reboot TV series. Leonardo DiCaprio will be producing and the film has been in the works for several years. Ben Stiller (Severance) has shown an interest in directing the film, but he has not been confirmed for that role yet. The previous TZ movie from 1983 consisted of four segments plus a prologue, but no information is currently available on what format the new movie will follow.
Interview with the Vampire Season 3 and Mayfair Witches Season 3
AMC continues to move forward with its Immortal Universe shows (based on the books by Anne Rice) even though the linear viewing numbers have been on the decline. Interview with the Vampire Season 2 aired in Summer 2024, and with it now showing up on the Production Weekly list, that will likely have it on track for the third season to premiere early 2026. Mayfair Witches will likely follow at some point mid-2026. The third installment in the series, Talamasca, is set for an October 2025 premiere.
Ghosts Season 5
The fifth season of this supernatural comedy is showing up on the latest Production Weekly list which should have it on target for a September or October premiere. The show has been renewed through its sixth season, and CBS will likely be working on getting this one into the syndication market soon.
Other genre entries from the listings for June 12th and June 19th: Harry Potter (HBO), Vought Rising (Prime Video), Starfleet Academy Season 2 (Paramount+).
