Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Ending, the Voyages Will Conclude with the Show’s 5th Season

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with its 5th season.

Paramount announced yesterday that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be getting a fifth season, but that will be its last. That season will also be getting a shortened episode count of only six as opposed to the usual ten-episode order. Executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman made the following joint statement about the announcement:

From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible. We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — THANK YOU. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.

Goldsman had previously said the following about the series:

Left to our own devices — which really means if Paramount will [let us] — we’ll keep going into the TOS era. And we know how. That’s the hope.

The news does not come as a huge surprise as none of the new Trek shows have gone past five seasons. In addition, Paramount is going through cost-cutting in advance of being acquired by Sky Global. Plus, there was only so far Strange New Worlds could go before catching up with the timeline of Star Trek: The Original Series, though I am sure that fans would have preferred at least another season or two. But five seasons and 46 episodes is a good run for a streaming original these days. The only other Trek series currently in the works is Starfleet Academy, and that one has already been renewed through its second season.

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres July 17th and I had not factored in the fourth season renewal to the Cancellation/Renewal Score yet. With that included, the current season is at 29 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (48% of shows tracked) vs. 17 cancelled and ending (28%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike, Mr. Spock, Number One, and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they explore the galaxy in the days before Captain James T. Kirk took command of the ship. It stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Rebecca Romijn, Jess Bush, Christina Chong. and Celia Rose Gooding.

The 2024-25 season is almost done, but I expect more announcements are on the way as the streaming services and networks get their schedules set for next year.
