Cancellation Watch: The Eternaut Enters the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, The Librarians: The Next Chapter Gets Off to a Good Start, and More

The Eternaut enters the Nielsen rankings at No. 8

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

The Eternaut (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This Argentinian post-apocalyptic series entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere, landing at the Number 8 slot with an estimated 473 million minutes of viewing. It has spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for non-English language shows, averaging 147 million hours of viewing per week, and not surprisingly it has been renewed for a second season.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter (TNT, Status: Renewed): This series premiered the Sunday before Memorial Day and pulled in a notable 0.2 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 809 million total viewers. Of course, it got a boost from the NBA playoff game that preceded it and it is unclear how many of those viewers stuck around for the entire episode. The next episode aired on Memorial Day, but it was after the Stanley Cup Finals and did not make it into the Cable Top 150. And we have not seen the numbers from this past Monday because Nielsen is running behind. Fortunately for the show, it was renewed for a second season in advance, and hopefully TNT will stop with the scheduling hi-jinks and start airing this one at its regular 9 PM EST time so that viewers know where to find it.

The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): There has been no word on a third season of this show yet, and its ratings have been on the low side so far in its second year. It has only averaged a 0.06 rating based on same-day viewing in the demo with 314 million total viewers across its first four Season 2 eps. It is likely picking up the slack with digital viewing, but AMC does not share those numbers. It appears that the other TWD spin-off Daryl Dixon is headed to a fourth season, and it certainly seems like the network will give Dead City at least one more season to wrap up its storylines, but at this point we just have to wait and see.

Love Death + Robots (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This animated anthology dropped out of the Netflix Top 10 after two weeks, though that is similar to its performance in its third season. The current batch of episodes has received mixed reviews, but the creative team does have plans to continue the show, so it could stick around for another year or so.
