Cancellation Watch: Doctor Who Misses the Nielsen Rankings, Love Death + Robots Enters the Netflix Top 10, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Doctor Who (Disney+/BBC, Status: Renewal Possible): This show has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings across the first two weeks of its second season (or fifteenth season, depending on which numbering you prefer). Disney+ made a deal to carry the first two seasons with Ncuti Gatwa, and a decision on whether they will continue to partner on the show will come after the current season has finished streaming. Showrunner Russel T. Davis does have stories planned out for three more seasons, but he has also said that a “pause” for the show could happen. If Disney does back out, I would say there is still a good chance Doctor Who could carry on without the Mouse House, but it may involve revamping some things and returning with a lower budget.

Love Death + Robots (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This animated anthology series entered the Netflix Top 10 for the week of its fourth season premiere, placing at the Number 7 slot with 5.9 million hours watched across 2.9 million households. The streaming services usually cap off their originals by the fourth season, but since this one is an anthology, each season is an event and that could keep it going a while longer.

The Last of Us HBO, Status: Renewed): This post-apocalyptic series entered the Nielsen Rankings for acquired shows at the Number 3 slot for the week of its premiere, pulling in an estimated 805 minutes of viewing. The show was renewed for a third season in advance of its second season premiere, and showrunner Craig Mazin has indicated they have a four-season plan for the series. That certainly seems likely at this point, and don’t be surprised if it is followed up by spin-offs, prequels, and sequels considering the massive viewership the property has drawn so far.

Terminatro Zero (Netflix, Status: On the Bubble): This animated entry in the Terminator franchise wrapped up its first season with somewhat of a cliffhanger, setting up a whole new story that could continue into a second season and beyond. The Latin Twitter account for Netflix put a post out last October suggesting a second season would happen–just a pic that shows what could be season 2 of the show along with other upcoming Netflix animated entries–but there has been no official word since it premiered in August of 2024, nor has it shown up in the Production Weekly listings. The more time that passes, the less likely it is that Netflix will renew this show, and I am moving it to Bubble status.
