Cancellation Watch: Black Mirror Tops the Nielsen Rankings, Agatha All Along Is Done for Now, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Black Mirror (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This anthology series topped the Nielsen streaming rankings for the week of its Season 7 premiere, pulling in an estimated 1.1 billion minutes of viewing. There has been no word on an eighth season of the show yet, but that certainly seems likely at this point. Co-creator creator Charlie Booker has said that “hopefully” Black Mirror will run forever, and seeing as each season is an event, this one could definitely stick around for a while.

Agatha All Along (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This show was not mentioned at the Disney Upfront on Tuesday, so I am going to change its status back to Mini-Series for now. The showrunner claimed that it would not have a second season, but Head of Marvel TV Brad Winderbaum suggested that a second season could still happen, though he qualified that by saying “let’s not rush it”. So perhaps Agatha could make a return at some point, but for now I will be counting it as a one-and-done Mini-Series as originally announced.

The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu, Status: Ending): This dystopian series entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its Season 6 premiere, landing at the Number 4 slot with an estimated 921 minutes of viewing. This is the show’s final season and it has proven to be quite a hit for Hulu, holding on to strong viewership throughout its run. A sequel series The Testaments is currently in the works, based on the Margaret Atwood book of the same name, and that will likely debut at some point in 2026.

The Bondsman (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This supernatural drama fell out of the Nielsen Rankings in its second week of release. All of its episodes were made available on its premiere date instead of a weekly release, so that might have contributed to its quick exit, but I am sure Amazon execs would have preferred that it stay in the charts for a few weeks. There was no mention of a second season at Amazon’s Upfront on Monday, so we will have to wait for word on its fate.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Amazon has given an early Season 3 renewal to Fallout, Fox has extended Krapopolis to a fifth season, and Netflix has passed on a third season of Star Trek: Prodigy (read more on these announcements at this link). But those do not impact the 2024-25 season because Fallout will not return until the next season, Krapopolis already counted as renewed, and Star Trek: Prodigy counted as cancelled two seasons ago. Also, moving Agatha All Along back to Mini-Series does not change the score because I do not factor planned on-off shows into the numbers. We currently stand at 28 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (48% of shows tracked) vs. 15 cancelled and ending (26%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 58
Cancelled 6 10.3%
Ending 9 15.5% 25.9%
Renewed 28 48.3%
On the Bubble 2 3.4%
Renewal Possible 13 22.4%
Mini-Series 4
