Cancellation Watch: Daredevil Born Again Is Absent from the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, SurrealEstate Is On the Bubble, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+, Status: Renewed): The Nielsen Streaming Rankings have covered four weeks since this show premiered, and it has not yet made it to the Top 10. According to Disney+, it had 7.5 million views across its first five days, but that was not enough to get it into the rankings. It has been renewed for a second season, but actually that is just a confirmation that they will complete the remaining episodes that were originally planned for its super-sized first year which is now being split into two seasons. We will see how this one tracks in the coming weeks, but viewership does not seem to be matching up to expectations at this point.

SurrealEstate (Syfy, Status: On the Bubble): Across the first four episodes of this show’s third season, it has only averaged 0.02 (two one-hundredths of a ratings point) based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic. Syfy only makes money from the advertising for the show, and if the ratings are too low the network can’t charge much for the ad spots. It doesn’t help that it has been relegated to Thursdays at 10 PM EST and that the network has done little to advertise it. I currently have it On the Bubble and fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks to bring this one attention if they want a fourth season.

The Wheel of Time (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): Viewership has been solid for this fantasy entry in its third season, and I expected that we would have received a renewal announcement by this point. It could be that Amazon is just trying to work out the contracts and also establish an endpoint for the series. The showrunner currently has eight seasons planned, but I believe that is a stretch. I still expect that it will be renewed, but don’t be surprised if this one wraps up around its fifth season.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

There were no cancellation or renewal announcements this last week, but The Sandman Season 2 has been announced for July and I have factored that in since it will be ending. I have also added Netflix’s Blood of Zeus (which premieres in May) to the shows that are ending. That brings the score for the 2024-25 season to 15 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (26% of shows tracked) vs. 28 renewed (48%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 57
Cancelled 6 10.5%
Ending 9 15.8% 26.3%
Renewed 28 49.1%
On the Bubble 2 3.5%
Renewal Possible 12 21.1%
