Not Dead Yet Renewed by ABC for Second Season

Despite posting only modest ratings in its first season and receiving very little promotion, ABC’s supernatural comedy Not Dead Yet is . . . not dead yet. The network has given the show the greenlight for a second season, though it is uncertain when it will return due to the writers’ strike. Not Dead Yet is the lowest-rated comedy on ABC and ranked 83 out of 114 broadcast network shows in the scorecard I compiled in April. But sitcoms are less expensive to produce, and word is that ABC execs like the show as well as its star Gina Rodriguez. This was one that I believed might be negatively impacted by the writers’ strike, but apparently the network decision-makers did not let that sway them. There is a good chance that the second season will not arrive until mid-season next year, though, seeing as the strike will cause significant delays if it goes on too long (and no end is in sight at the moment).

This bumps up the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season by one in favor of renewals with 33 shows renewed so far (40% of shows tracked) vs. 32 cancelled and ending (39%). You can see the detailed list of shows from the current season and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page. With this announcement, that leaves only two broadcast network entries–The CW’s Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights–still awaiting word on their fates.

Not Dead Yet follows a woman who returns to her career of journalism, but finds herself assigned to the obituaries and starts encountering the ghosts of the people she is writing about. It stars Gina Rodriguez, Hannah Simone, Lauren Ash, Rick Glassman, and Joshua Banday.
