Netflix Renews Sweet Tooth for a Third and Final Season

Netflix’s fantasy series Sweet Tooth has received a third season renewal one week after its second season premiere and it will be ending at that point. Apparently filming had already begun on the third season even though there was no official renewal announcement (likely to get ahead of the writer’s strike), and that has already been completed. The show performed well for the streamer in its first year, and opened at the Number 2 slot in the Netflix Top 10 for the week of its second season premiere. Creator and showrunner Jim Mickle had the following to say about the announcement:

At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.

Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.

A three-season run with the third announced in advance as the last used to be fairly standard for Netflix originals, but has become less common with the streamer pulling the plug on shows more quickly the last few years. Apparently, though, Netflix execs felt strong enough about this property to give it three full seasons based on the first-year viewership. The third season will go into post-production now that the filming has completed and it will not be impacted by the writer’s strike. Expect it to premiere in early 2024.

This announcement adds one to the renewal column for the current season and brings the Cancellation/Renewal score to 31 renewed (38% of shows tracked) vs. 28 cancelled/ending (35%).

Sweet Tooth takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus has killed off most of the human population and caused the birth of hybrid children who are part human, part animal. A half-deer/half-human boy named Gus sets out on a journey to find his mother with the help of his protector and mentor Jepperd. It stars Nonso Anozie, Christian Convery, Adeel Akhtar, Stefania LaVie Owen, and Dania Ramirez, and it is based on the DC comic book of the same name by Jeff Lemire.
