Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. Wolf Pack (Paramount+)
(Completed 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This werewolf drama has wrapped up its first season and it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings (now tracking Paramount+), but its prospects for renewal do look good. According to a recent interview with series star Sarah Michelle Gellar, “conversations are happening” on a second season of the show, so things are moving forward. Paramount+ has been good about supporting its originals so far even if they are not pulling in the highest viewership. An announcement on this could be coming as we head into the Upfronts next month.
SurrealEstate (Syfy)
(Renewed for 2nd Season): This supernatural dramedy was cancelled by Syfy after its first season run in Summer 2021, then it was surprisingly uncancelled, then there was no more news on it. But it is still moving forward and the second season will likely air at some point in Summer 2023. Production began in Fall 2022 and series star Tim Rozon said in an interview that they were “shooting in record time”, so it is likely they are done with filming by now and into post-production. Keep an eye out for an announcement on a second season premiere date and fans should do what they can to bring attention to the show because Syfy is notorious for not promoting its own originals.
Exception (Netflix)
(Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble): This sci fi/horror Anime arrived on Netflix in Fall 2022 with little fanfare and did not make it into that streamer’s Top 10 when it premiered. Since then, there has been no word on a second season. That would seem to indicate that it is doomed, and Netflix is notorious for its cancellations of late. But the streamer does tend to give some more leeway to its animated entries. Fans of the show should definitely make some noise to support it and perhaps that will convince Netflix execs to greenlight a second season, or maybe another venue will have an interest in picking up the property.
Not Dead Yet (ABC)
(Airing 1st Season, On the Bubble): This supernatural comedy arrived on ABC’s schedule in Spring without much promotion but it still managed to pull decent ratings early on, largely because it was scheduled between two of the network’s better-performing sitcoms. Its numbers have since dropped off, though, and it is now the lowest-rated comedy on ABC (more on that at this link). There are still rumblings that it has a chance to survive to a second season, so fans should make some noise to help it out as network execs are making decision on the upcoming 2023-24 schedule.
War of the Worlds (MGM+)
(Completed 3rd Season, Ended): This British/French-made series wrapped up its third season in Fall 2022 and it looks like it is done. That season was never officially announced as the show’s last, but it ended on a rather final note. Considering the alternate timelines introduced, there is always a possibility that a fourth season could emerge at some point. But the actors and creative team have moved on to other projects, so that seems unlikely.
