Fear the Walking Dead Will End With Its Eighth Season

Coming as no surprise, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead will be ending with its upcoming eighth season. The viewership for that show has been dwindling for years and I have been predicting for some time that it would be wrapping up. It currently has 101 episodes across seven seasons and the eighth will add twelve more which should guarantee the show an extended life in encore runs (and plenty of royalties for AMC). Season 8 will premiere on May 14th and will be split into two six-episode parts. AMC president Dan McDermott had the following to say about the show coming to an end:

It’s a truly exciting year for the Walking Dead universe as we conclude an epic journey on Fear the Walking Dead, which became one of the most successful shows in the history of cable television. And now we are set to bring forth the next iteration of the franchise – two new and anticipated series featuring the beloved characters of Maggie, Negan and Daryl. Along with that we begin production on the next chapter in Rick and Michonne’s unforgettable love story, which we look forward to sharing next year. This next phase of our beloved Walking Dead franchise promises to engage and enthrall faithful viewers. Fans new and old will love seeing zombies walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, beneath the Eiffel Tower, inside the Louvre, and at dozens more exotic and iconic locations from around the country and world.

TWD spinoff series The Walking Dead: Dead City–which follows Maggie and Negan in New York City–will premiere in June, and the Daryl Dixon spinoff which finds Daryl in Paris will arrive later in the year. The six-episode mini-series with Rick and Michone will premiere in 2024.

Deadline gives the following summary for the upcoming eighth season of Fear the Walking Dead:

The eighth season of Fear begins after the conclusion of Season 7, when Morgan’s and Madison’s hopes to rescue Mo from Padre did not go as planned. Now, Morgan, Madison and the others they brought to the island are living under Padre’s cynical rule. With our characters demoralized and dejected, the task of reigniting belief in a better world rests with the person Morgan and Madison set out to rescue in the first place — Morgan’s daughter, Mo.

The series stars Lennie James, Kim Dickens, Colman Domingo, Danay Garcia, Jenna Elfman and Rubén Blades.
