Cancellation Watch: The Book of Boba Fett, Disenchantment, Russian Doll, and More Appear to Be Done

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and streaming viewership for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as status updates and breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates:

We are coming to the end of the year and it is time to make a call on some of the pending shows that have been waiting for word on their fates for quite some time. In the Peak TV era, it is not uncommon for shows to come to an end with no official announcement, and that appears to be the case for the ones below. It is possible that one or more of these could return with a new season at some point, but for now I am considering them to be done.  I am counting the ones that wrapped up their storylines as ended and the others as cancelled (though the difference is mostly semantics).

The Book of Boba Fett (Disney+, Cancelled): It has been a year since this show premiered and there has been no word on a second season and no mention of the show when Disney has teased upcoming and returning Star Wars projects. It does not appear that Boba Fett will return with new episodes, though perhaps some loose ends could be handled in upcoming seasons of The Mandalorian.

Disenchantment (Netflix, Ended): This animated fantasy from Matt Groening released its fourth part in Spring 2022 and there has been no word on it since. Groening has plans for further seasons, but there are no indications those will go forward on Netflix, especially since that streamer has been in cancelling mode of late. Don’t be surprised if this one has a Futurama-type revival at some point once the rights lapse at Netflix, but I am not expecting any more seasons from that streamer.

Farzar (Netflix, Cancelled): This is another animated series that appears to be done at Netflix. It arrived in Summer 2022 with very little fanfare and never made it into the streamer’s weekly Top 10 list. Nor has there really been much said about it since it premiered. At this point, I am going to consider it another one-and-done casualty of the Peak TV crunch.

Russian Doll (Netflix, Ended): Yet another Netflix entry, the second season of this time-bending series arrived in Spring 2022 and there has been no word on it since. It has received good marks from critics and some attention at awards time, but the streamer has given no indication that a third season will happen, and I will count that silence as an indication that the show is done.

Undone (Prime Video, Ended): The second season of this rotoscope animated series arrived in Spring 2022 and then Amazon was silent on its fate after that. It did resolve most of its storylines, so perhaps it was just intended for a two-season run or Amazon advised the creative team to wrap things up by the end of the second year. The show did still leave open the possibility of further stories, but I am assuming those will not be happening anytime soon.

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

HBO’s His Dark Materials was the only genre entry to air new episodes last week and I only have the ratings numbers for one of the two eps it aired because the second hour dropped out of the Cable Top 150. The first part of its double-ep airing last Monday scored a 0.03 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 162K total viewers. The full ratings results for that show will be updated when the numbers are available.
