Cancellation Watch: Reginald the Vampire Could be Dead, the Voyage Could Continue for 1899, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and streaming viewership for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as status updates and breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates:

Trending Toward Cancellation:

Reginald The Vampire (Syfy, On the Bubble): This vampire dramedy saw an uptick in its numbers for the last two episodes of its first season, and it has received more promotion than other Syfy acquisitions such as Astrid & Lilly Save the World. But overall, its average same-day rating was around the same level that got the latter show cancelled and the network only makes money on advertising from acquisitions such as these (those ratings will not attract many interested sponsors). There is still a slight chance that this one could stick around, but fans will need to make some noise to bring it more attention.

Cabinet of Curiosities (Netflix, On the Bubble): This horror anthology has received some good buzz in its first season, but that means very little to Netflix execs. It had the dreaded three-week run in the streamer’s Top 10, and we have already seen shows like Warrior Nun, Fate: The Winx Saga, and The Imperfects get cancelled after they only spent three weeks on the charts. A second season is looking less-and-less likely for this show.

Trending Toward Renewal:

1899 (Netflix, Renewal Possible): This mystery series from the makers of Dark has been mostly overshadowed by the success of Wednesday, but it has spent four weeks on the charts so far (three in the Number 2 slot) and I expect it to still be there when this week’s numbers are published. I’m guessing that it will get the second season nod and hopefully it will stick around long enough for its creators to tell the tale they planned (Dark went for three seasons).

Chucky (Syfy, Renewal Possible): This show started out its second year with decent numbers, but then those took a dive as the season progressed. Still, I’m thinking the network will bring this one back for at least one more season because it is a high profile franchise and NBCUniversal has a financial stake in the show. But it wouldn’t hurt for fans to make some noise on the social networks to support the show.

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

HBO’s His Dark Materials had its third season debut the prior week, but the numbers were not available at that time. The show is airing double episodes and the first ep posted a 0.04 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 154K total viewers while the second slipped to a 0.02 rating and 121K total viewers. That show is currently in its final season.

On CBS on Thursday last week, Ghosts aired its one-hour Christmas episode and pulled its second-highest ratings of the year with a 0.59 score in the demo and seven million total viewers. That one currently looks to be a lock for a third season renewal.
