Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and streaming viewership for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as status updates and breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Nielsen was running late last week on the streaming rankings so I am combining those numbers with the linear ratings for today’s post. They are also running behind on the Sunday ratings due to the holiday, so I will add the numbers for Let the Right One In and Rick & Morty when they are available. I will likely continue to combine the streaming and linear ratings through December seeing as we will not have much activity during the holiday month.
Netflix Top 10:
Warrior Nun Season 2 improved one slot in the Top 10 for English Language shows for the week of November 14th to 20th, placing at Number 5. It had 28 million hours watched in its second week, but those may not be strong enough numbers to guarantee a third season seeing as Fate: The Winx Saga was cancelled after rising as high as 61 million hours for the best week of its second season. New series 1899 debuted in the Number 2 slot and pulled in 79 million hours for only a partial week of viewing (it premiered on Thursday) which has it off to a good start so far. Manifest Season 4 slipped to Number 3 with 36 million hours watched, and the second half of its final season will arrive in 2023. Cabinet of Curiosities dropped out after three weeks in the charts and a second season of that one could be a toss up at this point. Nielsen Streaming Top 10
Netflix’s Cabinet of Curiosities had its premiere in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for Original Shows the week of October 24th to 30th and it started at the Number 2 slot with an estimated 1.1 billion minutes watched. Those certainly seem like good numbers, but we have already seen that it dropped out of the Netflix charts after three weeks which may indicate the show does not have enough people sticking around the full season which Netflix execs prefer. Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale improved to Number 7 with 404 million minutes watched while Disney+’s Andor improved to Number 8 with 385 million minutes watched. Tales of the Jedi premiered on Disney+ that week and The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself bowed on Netflix, but neither made it into the Nielsen Top 10. HBO’s House of the Dragon slipped from the Number 1 slot in the Top 10 for Acquired shows for the first time since its second week on the charts, landing at Number 3 with 705 million minutes viewed. Linear Ratings Results of Interest:
Last Wednesday, Syfy’s Chucky improved just slightly to a 0.14 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic–including its simulcast on USA–for its Season 2 finale. That show saw its numbers slip this Fall as its second season progressed, especially for its broadcasts on Syfy. But it may have done well enough overall to get a third season nod. Leading out from that, Reginald the Vampire improved a tick to a 0.03 rating with 126K total viewers, but its fate is still very much in doubt.
On Tuesday last week, The CW’s The Winchesters slipped to a 0.08 rating with 500K total viewers, and its future remains uncertain as new owners continue to shake things up at that network. Most of the rest of the genre entries were in repeats or were preempted due to the holiday.
