The Witcher Has Been Renewed for a Fourth Season by Netflix, but With a Major Cast Change

Coming as no surprise, Netflix has given an early fourth-season renewal to its hit epic fantasy series The Witcher. That has been one of the streamer’s most-watched originals and they have developed it into a franchise with multiple spin-offs including The Witcher: Blood Origin which premieres December 25th. But there is a surprise with the renewal announcement because Henry Cavill will be departing from the lead role with Liam Hemsworth taking over as Geralt of Rivia. It was recently announced that Cavill will be returning as Superman on the big screen and he has other projects in the works which apparently conflict with the production schedule and overseas filming for The Witcher. Cavill had the following to say about departing from the role:

My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.

Hemsworth had this to say about taking over the role:

As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.

It is unclear if this will involve a Doctor Who-style transformation or if Hemsworth will just step into the role with no word on the change of appearance. The third season of the show is scheduled for a Summer 2023 release and those will be the last episodes with Cavill playing the lead role.

The Witcher follows the monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia who is driven by destiny to help the Crown Princess Ciri, a young girl who possesses magical powers and who is on the run after her kingdom is sacked by invaders. It stars Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Eamon Farren, Anya Chalotra, and Joey Batey and is based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.
