What Is It?

Astronaut John Crichton is caught in a wormhole that sends him to a distant part of the universe. He joins up with a group of alien refugees on the living ship known as Moya and together they find themselves on the run from the militaristic Peacekeepers who keep a tight grip on the planets in their part of the galaxy.

Aired: Sci Fi Channel, 1999-2004, 4 Seasons Totaling 88 Episodes + 1 Mini-Series

Created By: Rockne S. O’Bannon

Starring: Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Virginia Hey, Anthony Simcoe, Gigi Edgley

Why Watch It?

Farscape hit the airwaves in 1999 and delivered a very different sci fi epic from what the Star Trek franchise had been offering since the late 80’s with The Next Generation (1987), Deep Space 9 (1993), and Voyager (1995). Coming from the Jim Henson studios, Farscape introduced fantasy elements, a colorful cast of characters consisting of human actors and puppets, as well as a darker tone than what the more hopeful Trek entries usually delivered. This show also stepped up the visuals with a more cinematic look and was in many ways the direct precursor to the more epic sci fi and fantasy productions we are seeing currently on television, especially from the streaming services. For many, it was a love it or hate it affair, but when the show was at its top form it delivered it delivered some damn good sci fi TV (you can read more about the show at this link).

Where Is It Streaming?

This show was exclusive to Amazon’s Prime Video as recently as July 2022, but now it has moved to multiple platforms where it is streaming for free with ads.  Shout Factory TV has quite a number of genre entries available for streaming such as Space: 1999, Highlander The Series, and many of the Ultra Man entries and now it has added Farscape to its catalog. The show is also available on Amazon’s FreeVee service as well as The Roku Channel.  And Pluto TV also has it available as one of their on-demand selections.  Note that the Peacekeeper Wars mini-series is not included at the end of the fourth season on these services like Amazon previously had it.  You have to search for that as a separate entry, but all four platforms do have that included.

  1. I went to watch FarScape as I read Prime has it. It’s listed but won’t play. Any ideas? I tried to watch it on Pluto but massive amounts of ads.

    1. Apparently it is no longer included with Prime Video. It is showing to be available on The Roku Channel and Shout! Factory.

      1. It is now back on Amazon as part of their FreeVee service, though that might be limited to the U.S. It is also streaming on Shout Factory TV, The Roku Channel, and Pluto TV.
