The Handmaid’s Tale Renewed for Sixth and Final Season and The Testaments Will Be the Next Entry in the Franchise

Hulu has given its dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale a sixth season renewal ahead of its fifth season premiere, and that has been announced as its last.  Previously there was speculation that the show would wrap up with its fifth season, but this confirms that it will have one additional year to wrap up its storylines.  The show has been one of Hulu’s flagship scripted originals and the fourth season spent six weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, rising as high as Number 4 with 505 million minutes viewed that week.  The fifth season will have its premiere on September 14th and the sixth year will likely arrive late in 2023.

Once that has been completed, showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller will immediately move on to the follow-up series The Testaments.  That is based on the book by Margaret Atwood and acts as a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale.  It takes place fifteen years after the events of the original book as the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within.  There have been no casting announcements for that show yet and it will likely premiere at some point in 2024.

The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian near-future when fertility among women has dropped to catastrophically low rates across the world.  A totalitarian, theocratic government has taken over much of the United States, creating ridged social classes and controlling the few women who are still capable of bearing children.  It stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, and Ann Dowd and it is based on the 1985 book by Margaret Atwood.
